Opensource Basecamp

If any employee from Garmin sees this...

Since it looks like Basecamp has been put out to pasture, is there any chance Garmin would consider Open Sourcing it? I've tried every route mapping site out there (plotaraoute, gaiagps, caltopo kamoot, etc. etc.) and for me, Basecamp still has features that I can't find on other sites (or their functional equivalents aren't exactly what I need)

It would be great if it was Open Sourced and the developer community (which I am a part of) could fix the bugs that have cropped up since Garmin discontinued support/maintenance of the app.

  • This would be a great solution to be honest.

Basecamp stopped working on two of my three Macs (both the laptops).
Garmin Explore is not a replacement for Basecamp as it is just an mvp at this stage and not a mature product.

I've tried most of the other web products available today, but none came close to BC's functionality.
Also, non of these, including Gamin's own Explore, lets you use the maps you have on your device (I use both Garmin automotive maps and topographic OSM maps).

  • Just off my mind, a few things missing in Explore and other web mapping tools. Correct me if I am wrong, feel free to add any:

    – possibility to use the same maps as the device
    – plot routes using the same routing preferences as the device
    – Waypoint/Shaping point management is completely off
    – possibility to add announced waypoints, and define a range around it
    – segment tool (quick and efficient way to create route/tracks) :(
    – archiving properly: folders, lists, smart lists, search within the db, etc.
