I'm starting up again, after looking at hikingguy tutorials, but really don't want to switch tools. I got discouraged initially trying to set up maps and rather start out on tools that work.
I'm reading issues with basecamp and no updates for a very long time, but all the instructions use basecamp and not sure if QMaps or other tool is going to cause more trouble than slow basecamp.

Basecamp is your best move. It was discontinued and then picked up again (last update 18 May 2021). Until they get the Explore website up to snuff, I'd say that Basecamp will be supported.
