What is your common workflow to plan a trip?

Hello Everyone,

I'm a brand new user of the Montana700. My original intention was to use this for deep woods hiking and for longer distance motorcycling. The user interface is not exactly what I expected and the device is very cluttered with many little Apps. Took me 5 hours to finally get used to some of the tools and created a test Route on the device. Then, I found out that the Route wasn't snapped in corrected at every single part of the road.

So, I had to manually check the entire Route on BaseCamp to make sure the pink bright Route is correctly snapped in.

Seems like there should be a better and more automated way to do this. I'm sure I'm not doing this correctly.

Looked at the User's Guide on Garmin website and the steps had dependencies, like the already setup Waypoints and what naught.

Question: Is there a trusted place to look for clear instructions on how to ramp up the learning curve?

PS: Just so you know, I come from a technical background (Computer Science).

I have to say that the 2nd and 3rd Routes planning took under 10 mins, knowing where to find things and understanding the idiosyncrasies of the BaseCamp app helps.

Still looking for the best place to soak in other people's excellent workflows...

Here's a brief version of my workflow, which has served me well for years doing long distance motorcycle touring.

In BC, pick a start and end point for no more than one day of riding. Set preferences to fastest route and turn off everything else. Let BC plot a route from start to end. Go back and drag the route to your preferred choice of roads. Force a recalculation and see how badly BC butchers it. Fix that by putting more waypoints where needed to force the roads of your choice. Test again. Mount your GPS and drag or copy the resulting route to your Garmin folder. Un-mount and walk thru every turn on your GPS, making sure it hasn't been altered. Try a recalc and check again.
