Changing Waypoint Information

Is there a way to ensue that a new route names waypoints starting with the next available number? If I create a route with, say, 10 waypoints and then create another with 10 more waypoints the first route will be numbered 001 to 010 and the second route will be 011 to 020. If I then delete the second route, even though I delete the waypoints from my collection, the next route will commence at 021.

On another point about waypoints, is it possible to set the default in Basecamp to show only the icon and not the name? I cannot see an option to do this in Basecamp Preferences.

  • Seems like you tried to do everything right.

I have a real beef at times with BaseCamp Mac, often related in some way with its waypoint names rules and structure. Having deleted the route 011 to 020 and also the waypoints 011 to 020, you'd think that it would be smart enough to start again at 011. Sigh.

My biggest frustration is the need for BC to have a unique name for every waypoint, even though I tuck them away in folders of their own. I'll mark a walleye on the lake, and when copying it to BC, it appends a number. Then, when copying marks for these hot spots from my iMac to my handheld for a future trip, I'd rather have them all just be 'W' rather than 'W34' or 'W78'... It takes up precious screen space on the handheld. Or precious time renaming them after transferring. I get it, that's how it's structured, but I'm up to 'W146'... :-)

Nothing I've ever seen on displaying waypoint icons only.

  • Good to know I'm not alone in my frustration. With a few of these niggles sorted out Basecamp would be a halfway usable app and it would make for happier Garmin users. There is a certain irony to the fact that Garmin makes some of the best handhelds but has to counter its achievements by producing possibly the worst software!

  • @2279082 "...is it possible to set the default in Basecamp to show only the icon and not the name?"

The closest thing is to select the waypoint or multiple waypoints and right click choosing Get Info. Under the Advanced tab one can choose to show Symbol, Symbol and Name or Symbol, Name and Comment. Not a global solution but it may meet your needs on a per route basis. Thinking

  • Yes, I found that one thanks. It's a bit of a bummer that you can't set it up globally but that's Garmin for you!
