Installing maps on Basecamp in Big Sur?

Using my Windows machine it was relatively easy to install new maps to Basecamp, but I've not found a straightforward way to do it in the Mac version. I'm running Big Sur if that makes any difference.

I can see maps on my Oregon handheld, but I don't want to have to plug that in every time I want to use the map.

Tried installing maps from [http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/](garmin.openstreetmap.nl/) but Basecamp does not recognise the files when I try and import them. The installer files all mention OSX, which is too old for my machine.

Any guides on how to add maps?

  • The maps you downloaded  for the device are probably IMJ files.  For the Mac you need GMAP files and you just double click on them to install them.  I get my maps from OPENMAPCHEST.ORG and have been a lot happier with them than the OPENSTREETMAP ones an they have the IMJ, EXE AND GMAP  files.

  • I'll give it a go, cheers. Caught the site just in time, he's shutting down next year.

  • Tried that, but double clicking the gmap file just opens it as a folder, nothing executable there, with no clue in any of the files inside as to what to do with it.

exe files are of no use on a Mac, they're for Windows machines.

I'll reach out to the site's owner, see if he has any instructions for Mac, as he only mentions how to install for Windows.

  • Thats unfortunate he is shutting down.

I JUST downloaded the United States West map.  He used to have a whole USA map but apparently it got bigger than 4GB

It is the bottom one but you have to be a member to download it.

I double clicked the GMAP file and MapManager shows up.  The following box is BLANK but just hit INSTALL

The map is then shown as installed in MapManager

This only works if you have MapManager installed and GMAP files are associated with Mapmanager

  • BTW, if double clicking doesn't work try opening MapManager and use Install in the menu and pick the GMAP file.

The maps are excellent from OpenMapSource.

  • The site owner replied. mapManager isn’t needed, this worked fine for me:

    • 1. Unzip the file. You should get a folder "OpenMapChest <something>.gmap"
    • 2. Use Finder to locate your Application folder.
    • 3. Hold Ctrl and click on the Basecamp app icon. Select "Show Package Contents"
    • 4. "Contents" folder should show up. Select it and you will find a whole lot of files and folders.
    • 5. Drag "OpenMapChest <something>.gmap" into the "Resources" folder.
    • 6. Start (or Restart) your Basecamp and the map should show up.
  • On a Mac, many times when you update software the WHOLE App Package gets replaced.  If that happens with Basecamp you will have to do this over again so keep the GMAP file you downloaded to install again.  MapManager places them in your USER folder tree which does not get replaced.
