Bascamp 4.8.11 still much slower in 2D compared to 3D

The latest updated for Bascamp (Mac) 4.8.11 fixes the extreme slowness of Basecamp with MacOS 11 Big Sur. But still the 2D view is much slower compared to the 3D view. 3D really works fluently but in 2D I still have to wait a few seconds until the map updates. This makes moving or zooming the map nearly unusable. I don't understand why the 2D performance is so bad compared to 3D.

  • Just installed 4.8.11 and yes it's sightly better but still pretty much unusable in 2D mode.

  • I am running Big Sur on a late 2016 MBP. Even with Basecamp 4.8.11 maximised on a 5K external monitor and with high-resolution raster/bitmap maps, I find 2D scrolling and zooming to be perfectly acceptable and exactly as it was with the previous version of Basecamp and Catalina. I get satisfactory performance whether the maps are installed on the computer or on my GPSmap 66. I have always found scrolling in 3D to be faster than 2D. Perhaps there is less data drawn on the screen?

I have just checked on my 2011 Dell Precision M6500 with Windows 10 which is running Basecamp 4.7.0 and the 3D view scrolls faster than the 2D view.

  • I find Basecamp especially slow in calculating a large route. Really a big difference with before. There are also a few bups such as the small icons that you can choose for waypoints.

  • Yes, scrolling 2D is slow. Sometimes a bit jerky. And sometimes unpredictable jumps when zooming. Not great, but manageable, I guess.

I got a long spinning beach ball again today. Panicked for a bit, then realized that while viewing entire My Collection, I had requested Sort By Date: Newest First. It sort of ponders for a bit when arranging 23,404 items, it seems.

  • I'm running a MPB 2018 w/ 4 T-bolt ports and macOS 11.1, and BC is just like it was before the Big Sur incompatibility issue: latency. Pretty much the way is has been for years. Which isn't saying much. One would think that running on a zippy MBP that BC would be snappy, and no latency, but that is not the case.

I'n seeing equal latency with 2D and 3D.

But I am not getting the spinning color wheel anymore, so that's a good thing.

  • Same experience for me (macOS Big Sur 11.1): The updated Basecamp 4.8.11 now is usable again, but it is much (!) slower than before. This is particularly annoying when zooming and moving the map. Rework is definitely necessary here.

  • Same for me on a late 2017 MBP 16GB memory. Performance of Garmin Basecamp 4.8.11 is perfectly acceptable for me, even while scrolling or zooming.

  • Same here, pretty slow at scrolling, zooming and dragging route points to re-route in 2D view, but at least it is working better. I guess it is a general lag of everything since the update but of course much quicker than the initial big-sur problem. There seems to also be a glitch where some map tiles are blanking out at certain zoom levels. This could be just that basecamp is running slower than before and can't keep up with the data load or the update cleared the cache.

  • Same experience for me. Scrolling the map is slow to react. For dragging and dropping routes I have to keep the pointer on the route for a second or 2 before I can drag and drop. I'm on a 5K Retina iMac 2017.

Hopefully this will be improved with a new update.

  • My 5k Retina Imac was slower scrolling, etc in Basecamp as soon as Garmin had the 64bit release.  I finally gave up and just run it in Low Res mode and it has been working great.  This is on Catalina so I dont know if this help on Big Sur.
