Map Install Big Sur

I am trying to upload 1-5 maps to my garmin oregon 600. after searching the forums for an hour I located the temporary "fix" for basecamp so I could transfer over my waypoints and route. now I am trying to upload my basemaps from map install. I was told by a garmin "tech" support representative that they had no plan to support map install or their physical DVD maps any longer. Ditto the SD cards I purchase. I have approximately 400$ worth of their mapping software in map install which I have used for over a decade for work. I was told by the support person to possibly purchase a PC and try with a PC. I was told I could also physically load the info into the gps from the dvd. In case it saves anyone any time like I have wasted trying to get waypoints (20 or so) 1 route and 5 basemaps here are some suggestions:

1. Don't call or email tech support. After being on hold for 27 minutes the entire tact taken by tech support was to say to move to PC and that the maps and software I purchased from Garmin are no longer going to be supported.

2. Tech support told me to fiddle with the sleep mode on the Mac. They have no idea where that is on the new Big Sur update, but it is under battery. This has nothing to do with the problem either.

3. You cannot physically load the maps from the DVD as suggested by tech support. You can only load it onto your computers hard drive.

4. After being told repeatedly the "engineers" are hard at work on the issue with basecamp, nothing was going to be done with mapinstall.

So if anyone has found a work around for getting your maps into your gps using a mac running Big Sur please do share your work around so I never have to reach out to Garmin "support" again and waist my time.

  • Generally Garmin support is good, at least it has been in the past. What maps are you trying to load to your Oregon? Are they installed to your Mac and showing in BaseCamp? What problem are you having when you try to use MapInstall?

5 basemaps from US 100K V4. they are installed on my mac and do show in basecamp. the problem I have is the pinwheel of death and a message that says it is taking mapinstall longer to build the basemap which goes on indefinitely. I am unable to load the 5 basemaps as a result or even navigate the map install. running big sur of course.

  • I suspect then you'll need to wait until they fix Big Sur, or revert to Catalina

it doesn't appear Garmin has any plans to "fix" mapinstall, thus why i started this thread as I was unable to find any mention of Big Sur v mapinstall work arounds...

BTW just got off my 3rd call with "tech" support. as of yet nothing has been accomplished other than I have related the issue to 3 different people after 30+ minute hold times. I would rate that support as sub par and why I will no longer be using garmin going forward.

*update* just got off my 4th phone call with tech support. again if it helps anyone else in the same bind here disregard the information provided by tech support to use basecamp to install your maps. that isn't a functionality for mac users. After several requests for tech support to show me where this option is on basecamp they realized that functionality is only for PC (the irony as this issue I believe now has been well covered with Big Sur). So now a support ticket has been opened on map install as well. Of course it never occurred to the engineers to check their other software functionality and how it meshes with Big Sur after having mac users complain for 3 months about the issue. It seems fairly typical now to have the customer report issues to the engineers before Garmin takes action. Additionally Garmin customers have to be persistent and have lots of free time to report the issues to tech support as I started my first request at 07:30 PST and it wasn't until after the 4 the phone call which just finished at 13:00 before anyone at tech support finally comprehended that I am using map install on a mac to get my maps into my oregon 600. 2 of the 4 tech support folks were personable, however none of the 4 provided any support for the issue other than to have me repeat the issue x 4. I will stick with my assessment that garmin support is sub par and it would appear we are returning to the old days of my first purchased eTrex circa 2000 when garmin only worked with PC. I will no longer be purchasing any additional mapping software or units until I absolutely have to and only then grudgingly. I will shop eBay used before I do any business with Garmin directly going forward.

  • I haven't been able to get my maps installed on my Oregon 600 even in HighSierra (currently using MapInstall 4.3.4). The transfer starts, but repeatedly fails after an hour or so. I've got an old MacBook Pro with a dual boot system (SnowLeopard and HighSierra), and using MapInstall 4.1.1 in SnowLeopard still works perfectly fine on the same laptop. So for getting maps installed, I always have to run the old OS.
