Base Camp slow!

Let me start with computer configuration:

Latest 16" MacBook Pro, 8 Core i9 Processor, 32GB of 2667 DDR Ram, AMD Radeon Pro 550M 8 GB RAM - In other words, this is a very FAST Mac.

By trade Im an Architect that runs 3D Cad software, full Adobe Suite and complex rendering software, all of which run very fast on this machine.

I just bought a new BMW motorcycle which included a Garmin Nav VI tailored for BMW motorcycles.  I downloaded Base Camp to my Mac.  Scrolling the map, trying to create trips is brutally slow, just as it has been for the last 15yrs on a Mac.  Nothing has changed!!!

Why can't Garmin speed this software up?  Not only is it slow, the actual graphics look like they are from Windows 1975 era.  Garmin is lazy, a  company that is too unconcerned with making their software any better because they have virtually no completion.

Shame on you GARMIN, Base Camp flat out is a piece of garbage.

  • It's free. If you want to improve scrolling install the map to your Mac rather than trying to read it from the device, scrolling on mine is quite quick.

What are you replying to?!?! I never mentioned scrolling on the device.  I clearly stated its brutally slow on the Mac.  Creating routes In Base Camp to add to the device, is painful at best!

The app is free; that’s no an excuse for it to suck!  I bought the device knowing the app was made to use with the device.  I suggest you look at all the other users of this app expressing how slow it is, I’m not alone. Apparently bot you and Garmin are ignoring this fact.

Do you feel you need to be an evangelist for Garmin just to boost your ratings here?...

I suggest, if you are going to respond to an OP, you might want to actually address the subject that the OP wrote about.

  • I feel your pain. I recently got a new iMac and most things are no faster than before. I believe that most Mac software is designed very lazily, just adding bloat rather than trimming it down and making it run faster. Seems that the faster the CPUs get, the lazier the programming, figuring "they've got the speed to handle it, why bother?"

  • You brought up scrolling, not me, and I wasn't discussing scrolling on your device.  As I said install the map to your Mac rather than trying to read it from your device and scrolling will be much faster.  Whether that's fast enough for you I have no idea. Also try setting map detail to medium as that also increases scrolling speed.

Again, did you read my post.  I don't have an issue with the device.  The problem is working Base Camp on the Mac.  If you were not responding to the issue on the Mac, why are you wasting our time here?

Quit making up your mind to respond to a non-issue.

The desktop version of Base Camp is ridiculously slow - FULL STOP, now go play elsewhere!

  • You seem convinced for some reason I'm talking about your device, I'm not.  You're clearly not understanding what you're being told, install the map to your Mac. Scrolling will then be faster. Set detail level to medium when scrolling and it will be even faster. For the avoidance if doubt this is all about your Mac, as it was from the beginning.

Incidentally insulting those who try to help you isn't going to help you either.

You’re the one having a problem understanding. It’s on my Mac already!!!

  • Well it might have helped if you'd added that at the start. Regrettably my crystal ball doesn't see over your shoulder.  In that case you can speed scrolling by reducing the detail level, if that still isn't fast enough for you you could always try other programs.
