Install Topo software

My platform is a Macbook Air, running MacOS Catalina v 10.15.3. I am using Basecamp v 4.8.8. And recently I bought a Garmin Topo U.S. 100K full coverage March 2016 on a SD card. I can get it to work on basecamp, but each time I want to use it I have to load the SD in a docking station then attach it to the Macbook Air. My problem is, I want to install the topo software into the Basecamp software so I don’t have to load the topo software each time I want to use. Thanks Al Cassell

You can copy the files to a removable drive, another card or memory stick or virtual removable drive, BaseCamp will then read the map from that.

If I'm understanding this correctly, you can't install the topo map in Basecamp because maps purchased on SD cards from Garmin are locked against copying.

While it's true the map is locked to the card BaseCamp will still read the map even if copied to another card, but that card won't work in another device.

Why? You have them. If you don't like the idea of having it on a card or stick place the map files on a virtual removable drive, it'll work as well as one installed on your mac for BaseCamp to use.

When you install, select the option to put it on your device AND your computer.

You may be able to sell your SD card version, as it will work on any compatible device.

Five replies in a Macintosh forum from a self-professed PC-only user... At any rate, he did hint at the one good solution: learn as much as you can about creating virtual drives (.sparseimage files) on the Mac. Disk Utility is your best bet. Copying the entire map chip to a mountable virtual drive will allow BaseCamp to use the data without having any physical card or other device connected.
