DriveSmart 65 with Alexa not showing detailed maps when connected to Basecamp on MAC.

Hi!

Like the title says my new Drivesmart 65 with Alexa connects to basecamp but under maps only the global map is displayed. I like the unit a lot (upgraded form a Drive 6) but if I can't get this to work so I can plan routes on Basecamp I'll need to return it. Garmin support has sent me links on how to transfer waypoints - I am not sure they even reading my emails describing my issue.

Any suggestions would be great!

  • Which Mac version are you running, I seem to recall someone posted that with the latest mac versions you need to give a permission somehow in order for BaseCamp to access your maps, hopefully someone with a mac will help you out shortly.

    Hi, Thank you.

I am on Version High Sierra 10.13.16 (older version as I don't have enough bandwidth at my house to download an update at home and need to get to my buddies house to do it)

  • Then that's weird.  When you say your DriveSmart connects with BaseCamp does it show in the top right hand pane under My devices?  Which BaseCamp version are you using?  What do you see when you select Maps in the top toolbar?

Select View/Customise toolbar and ensure Currently displayed map is selected.  With it visible in the toolbar what does it show?  What do you see if you click on the Up/Down arrow?

The device does show In the top left pane. Unlike my drive 6 though it doesn’t show a map folder then the preinstalled map name there. I can transfer waypoints and routes.

under Map is shows global map. On the drive 6 the NT map shows up there for me to select. Then of course  the map unlock options that are on the bottom of that drop down.

I downloaded the newest version of basecamp a few days ago.

I do have that checked. The rest I’ll need to try tonight as I’m not home.

    thanks!

I just got a reply from Garmin again. They sent this link

it reads like I need to download maps with a DriveSmart  express doesn’t give me the option, maybe because it says there is an update? I’ll try and get to my buddies house and update then check back in!

    support.garmin.com/.../

  • Express will only give you the option to install the map to your mac if previously, or now, there is an update for the map supplied with your device.  Express cannot copy the map from your device to your mac for BaseCamp to use.

I don't quite understand where you get the idea that "it reads like I need to download maps with a DriveSmart".  I can't see anything in the link sent to you that suggests that, and the maps on my DriveSmart display in BaseCamp directly from the device.  One thing you may not have done is to leave your new device connected long enough, on first use BaseCamp needs to index the map on the device, and this can take tens of minutes depending on the size of the map.

I got that “I think I need to download maps” because it says at the link:

“If using an Automotive device with Map Updates like the Nuvi, Drive or DriveSmart Series you can download the City Navigator mapping to the computer via Express”. Other type devices says you can read from the device.

However I went to my friends house and used the WIFI feature to update the GPS to latest firmware and when I plugged it in BaseCamp recognized the device, showed the Maps folder and City Navigator North America NT. I selected it and it took a few minutes and there was the detailed maps! Exactly how I have come to expect with all my other Garmin Devices.

I am glad that I do not need to return it - now on to some route planning.

    Thank you.

  • It says you can download the maps, not that you must, it's the same with all automotive devices.

Glad you got it sorted though. I'll close this thread.
