Basecamp data not available after upgrade to 4.8.3

I upgraded from 4.7 to 4.8 (using the App store). When I launch Basecamp the data shown is just the default. I have backups but cannot see anything different in older versions in this folder:

/Users/Rich/Library/Application Support/Garmin/BaseCamp/Database

Here I see the following but anything I have tried to do does not work

If I try to 'Import into "My Collection"...' I get the following message (4.6 or 4.8). Note that I do not see any other version folder in older backups.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

  • The files you need are alldata.gdb and folderdata.gfi, try copying those from 4.6 to 4.8

    Hi

Thanks for the quick response. I had already figured this out but kept getting the corrupt data error message when I tried to access.

I started playing again this morning.

I used a deleted software tool to search the disk and it came up with one other .gdb file of 1.78MB that showed it was last modified 28-May-17 as the others. I could not import it but tried (probably by accident) double clicking it. This opened Basecamp 4.8.3 with all the data right up to my edits from Friday.

I cannot explain exactly what happened. It looks like the data is stored as a package and when Basecamp saves the data it does not update the saved date of the container. I think May 2017 was when I first started getting 32/64 bit messages and made a backup. However, each update since then has just used the old data.

I see you often respond to people's question on the forum so maybe you have a better idea what might have happened - it night have been me of course. I will make sure I make a backup from Basecamp anything I make significant changes from now on!

  • Sorry no idea what exactly happened but normally copying those files across works, glad you got it sorted though.

Also BaseCamp can't handle the situation when your disk is out of free space. It broke the database when you made any changes it that situation most of the time. I made backups of the BaseCamp folder regularly with Rsync, disk backup with Time Machine, export my collection to file and the backup from the file menu from time to time. Also when the middle number upgraded basecamp converts the data and make a copy of it in separate subfolder (4.6, 4.7, 4.8) and when it happens I visually check whether all my data is there. There was an issue once when some of my tracks was not moved on upgrade without any popup or error message. It always was not so stable, so be aware.

Also there was one not very obvious behaviour: when you select some item (track, waypoint, route) and then click on some list or folder the CMD+Backspace combination is still applied ti the item and not the folder or list silently removing the item without any message. You can take them back with CTRL+Z but it's easy to miss the fact and loose the data.
