There is an issue with the latest versions of BaseCamp and MapInstall. The solution is to downgrade to an earlier version or if the map is available as a .img file simply copying that file to your device. What map are you trying to install?
It's this map here:
https://www.himalayangpsmaps.com/himalayantopo-nepal-routable-garmin.html
It comes as a zip file, when extracted there is no .img file. Is there a way to convert to .img? or do you know which version of Mapinstall and basecamp is best to use?
Well it says:
You can purchase this map including a lifelong update guarantee as follows:
So your best bet is to do that, if it can be installed directly to a sd card that must mean it provides a .img file
If you're struggling with that I suggest you use their contact form https://www.himalayangpsmaps.com/info/contact.html
Is this not fixed yet?? I have exactly the same bug!
Then as suggested above contact the map maker using the link above
The map isnt at fauilt because the PC version of MapInstall works as expected. The OSX one will not transfer a map. Ive just had Garmin's official support basically try to pull the same excuse.
The OSX MapInstall doesnt work.
The PC one does.
How is that the third party map producers fault?

You said this two years ago. The issue remains. How is this anyone elses fault but Garmin!
No issue now, working perfectly for me and has for just after the post you quoted when Garmin released new versions of BaseCamp and MapInstall
And the bug is STILL there in the newest version. And not just me, another user on the F6 forum here whos a mac user did the same and confirmed Mapinstall doesnt work on the Mac but works fine on the PC
"No issue now, working perfectly for me"
Big Sur?
From our discussion - he found it first, I confirmed it. Both can get the PC version to work fine
