BaseCamp Newbie. Trail routing tools route me miles out-of-the-way to a highway.

BC can only route you along roads, tracks etc that are routeable on the map you've selected. For hiking it's best to use the Direct activity profile and create your own routes.

I routed following the instructions in the BaseCamp manual: "Creating a Simple Route", "Creating a Route using Waypoints", "Creating a Route on the Map", and "Creating a Route using Tracks".  Each method, similarly, routed me to some crazy, far-off, highway.  Are you saying that result is to be expected, and there's a different method?

Separately, though somewhat related, does the state Huntview Plus map allow routing on trails?  I've read some reports on the 'Net that Garmin's 24k map shows fewer trails than the 100K.  Is that, generally, correct?

Yes the result is to be expected, BaseCamp can't route you along the trails you want unless the map can provide the details, it's not a BC issue

I've used it for years, both for route planning for my automotive devices and my handhelds. For automotive it can use the maps, but hiking etc maps generally don't take the route I want so I just use direct activity. Plotted hundreds of routes that way

A Garmin CS phone rep helped me out.  Apparently, with my set-up, direct activity (as you mentioned) will work, while "Hiking" will not.
