route on basecamp route on GPSMAP 64

Hi, I have seen similar questions on this forum, but am still stuck. I made a cycling route on basecamp (working from the connected device, and made sure I am on the same map). On my GPSMAP 64 I then open "route planner", click on the route I made, then "view map", and then I am stuck. The route shown still has the correct beginning and end points, including some points in the middle I selected while working on basecamp, but only straight lines between the connecting points. How do I actually start following this route and get my gpsmap to connect via routable roads again? Thanks!
  • Sounds like you're in off road mode, assuming you are using the same map and it is a routeable one. You need to select on road in your settings on your 64, not sure where it is on that model but the manual should tell you.

The 64s Route Activity Menu List contains at least 10 categories. After passing the learning curve to make a change, rebooting by powering down may be required..

Thanks, I tried to both options described above. But no luck. I narrowed the problem down to the following: On basecamp, I make a route from point A to point B. Transfer this to Garmin 64 and it works fine. However, the moment I alter the route on basecamp by dragging the route over to another road or path, press recalculate and send to device, the device (64) then no longer shows/has a useable route (only straight line between point A and point B). Any thoughts? Thanks!
  • Do you see the newly sent route and the original working route? I ask because you say the device no longer has a useable route, so does now only one show? Or do both show but the original now doesn't work correctly?

I felt the need to poke around in the 64s too, so after looking at the various internal files with a cable connected to the computer (no Basecamp) I unplugged and tried some standalone route manipulations. None of my routes were created in Basecamp, but long road routes with no avoidances over mapped roads In Automotive mode seemed to calculate pretty well. Same with Direct, of course.

Bicycling routing over bike friendly roads did not fare so well over long random distances, and I never felt that I was in control of the device. My original routes self deleted after a while. It may be better to send Basecamp tested bike routes to the device in shorter segments at first, and delete all routes from the device before sending newer test segments. Reboot as required.

The new route does show up on the route planner "list". When clicking "view on map" it shows the route from A to B with "pins" on all my route alterations with direct lines between the "pins". But the option to "review route" or the "go" button never appear. I was indeed wondering whether there is too much data for my 64s to process, but the problems occurs even on short routes (20KM), with just 1 route alteration. With route alteration I mean dragging the route, as calculated in basecamp from point A to point B, to a parallel quieter road. @ 39_steps; this problem does not occur when creating routes on the device itself. However, the ability to create/manipulate routes is much less then on basecamp (mostly due to the small screen). Thanks!

Try using Automobile Driving or Motorcycling Activities under routing menu. These are the only two options that let you select all road types. Consider disabling automatic recalculation.

Add edit: Check the default avoidances for each activity/ Some may default to avoid all road categories, which either results in a direct route or a routing failure. Good luck.
