Delete Shaping Points

After a route is developed using shaping points on Base Camp can the shaping pints be deleted before the route is transferred to the Garmin GPS or can they be deleted from the route after it has been transferred to the Garmin.
They are of no use when you are following the route and can be confusing at times.
I use a Mac.
  • Certainly on the Windows version you can, not sure about the mac, however why strip them out? How are they confusing? I've always left mine in as should you deviate off route they can, on certain devices, help you back on to it. It would help if you told us what device this query is about?

My device is a BMW Motorrad Nav V. When riding the GPS shows me and address our business on my screen that came from a shaping point. I do not need these extra distractions when riding and when I am only looking for an alert to the next turn. I see there are 2 buttons that I can have on my screen. One is a "Stop" sign and the other is a "Pin" with an arrow around it. Would the Pin have any use in this case?
I use this GPS and Base Camp to plot routes on secondary highways and country roads that are off the main stream. It works much better that stopping at the side of the road every few miles to check a map to see if you are on the correct country road and looking for road signs.
  • Well try stripping them out and see if you're happy with the result :)

There is a Zumo Users forum at http://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/ which may be able to provide specific help on your device.

A route really is just identifying the points. How to go between those points is then determined by your GPS.
Thus, if you created shaping points to ensure that Basecamp is taking you the route you want to and not just take you from point A to point B then those shaping points will need to be transferred as well otherwise your GPS on your BMW will not know about it.

For example, I create a route starting at my home, ending at my destination. I use shaping points to then take certain roads etc. as I want to take a more scenic road and not just go from my home to my destination. If I then export this route, it will just contain my starting point, my destination, and my shaping points. Importing them into a GPS, the GPS will then recalculate this route based on all those points.
BUT, if I delete the shaping points then the only thing the GPS will know is starting and destination. It will calculate based on that and my scenic route is gone.

What you can do is mark those shaping points as "Do not Alert". Then if your GPS adheres to it then it will not alert you on that shaping point.
  • Note that shaping points by definition don't alert. If you have points that do they are viapoints and not shaping points. The difference is that you have to actually drive through viapoints, shaping points you can easily bypass should you wish. There is some additional information in this old sticky, but be careful as not all of it is now accurate, but it may help add to your understanding.
