The Apple Appstore just gave the update message for BaseCamp 4.7.0

What's new?
- Updated BaseCamp to conform to GDPR privacy requirements
- Improved MTP device support
- Removed online components of Garmin Adventure
- Removed Garmin Cloud Drive support
- Removed Garmin Connect find and upload
- Removed Picassa photo sharing
- Improved stability

For me the good news is: There still is a developer team working on BaseCamp.

kind regards,
Svenja Svendura
PS: Hello to everybody. I'm from Germany and just new to the forum. :-)

I wouldn't count on it, some of Garmin's staff have been pulled off other stuff I suspect and now the change has been done we won't see anything else except a 64bit version for Macs.

I'd love to be proved wrong though so if there is a developer team could we have some interaction here like we did 2-3 years ago??
  • I agree, looks like they hastily killed off as many online components as possible in an attempt to comply with GDPR later this week, but without expending any actual resource. The mention of Garmin Adventures is interesting however, especially since "online components" is pretty much all it's made of. Will this be the end of the feature?

I wonder when/if we will see a 64 bit version for Macs? They snuck this update in under the wire of Apples Appstore June deadline for when it will stop accepting updates for existing 32-bit applications.
  • Ahh good. I was afraid they would slip in 4.7.0 in order to remove the online components and then let it drift into the sunset. Glad to see there are some plans for 64-bit version that will at least continue to work for some time in the future.

Hopefully inReach Sync is also among those 64-bit updates :)

In the meantime I have been looking for alternatives, like online trip planners, and I wonder how long a strong demand for a static software like BaseCamp will exist at all, because some of them work really fine and most are easier to use. I am looking forward for a new version of BC, though.

  • Have you found any that you like yet? I have looked at a few of the online solutions including Furkot, TomTom My Drive and a couple of others, but I haven't found one that I like as much as Basecamp.

One of them and I forget which it was, seemed very nice for planning. But when I exported the route and imported it to my Garmin, it simply created an "as the crow flies" route. It also created a track, which I was able to convert to a route and it looked correct when I did, but it was extra steps of exporting, importing, converting and verifying for correctness.

Indeed, I did. For years now I've been using Motoplaner.de but the service will stop on friday due to the GDPR. That brought me back to using BaseCamp once more.
One quite good alternative is kurviger.de . Works fine and gpx export is functional, also.
But for now I'll stick to BC and see, where it gets me.
  • It's pretty obvious that trip planners are not for everyone. I just can't understand why most of my computer friends can't see how much the need basecamp. I'm pretty sure basecamp will be around for many more years. Moore's law is slowing and 64 bit update should hold mac users for many years. We had sever years of Garmin development team taking input from forum uses, that is very much the exception and not the rule for software development. Even if a company takes input it is usually on for the beta version. Once an app reaches maturity like BaseCamp you usually only see updates to take advantage of new technologies and OS changes. Trip Planning is the one area Garmin has the big advantage. I quit riding motorcycles years ago, with built in navigation, iPhone, and iPads, BaseCamp is the only reason I continue to by Garmin products. My biggest fear is the new GPS will not take route uploads that do not recalculate and change the route. My 3579 and 1490 do a great job currently. If they start recalculation the route and changing it from BaseCamp, I will quit buying the latest GPS.
