How to create a route the way I want to drive?

I have to say that I think that BaseCamp is very cumbersome to work with (to put it politely). I want to create a route from Sedona, AZ to Jojoba Hills RV resort in Aguanga, CA (45120 Highway 79 South, Aguanga, CA 92536). I do not want to drive the way BaseCamp suggested (via Phoenix) but like this:

From Sedona, AZ 86336
- on AZ 89-Alt to Cottonwood
- on AZ 89-Alt to Jerome
- on AZ 89-Alt until getting onto AZ 89 in Prescott
- on AZ 89 to Congress
- on AZ 71 until getting to US 60 in Aguila
- on US 60 until getting to I-17 shortly before Quartzsite
- from there on as originally suggested by BaseCamp

Is there a way to do this in an at least halfway elegant way? Is there a way to add in-between points after putting in start and end points, staying always just on the State Routes or US Routes, not "entering" the cities on the way? I can not figure this out.

  • Set start and end point. Calculate route. Drag route line to your desired road. Repeat as necessary.

If I drag the route line I always end up at some point with going in circles or adding "side routes." I have done this (and undone and redone and undone and redone) more than hundred times. This seems to work with short routes but - at least for me - it does not work with such a long route. Attached are two screen shots that show what I mean. One shows a part of the route as suggested, the other shows the "route" after I dragged the line from a little south of Camp Verde (I-17) to Jerome (AZ 89-Alt).
  • What do you have for a vehicle profile and how is it configured?
  • Also check that particular road, looks like it goes through a National Park, if there are fees to get in and you have avoid tolls set or it's a seasonal road and therefore not open all year round BaseCamp will create the route you see as it creates routes based on the avoidances etc you've selected.

As for other loops, check you're not placing the via point on the wrong side of a divided highway, zoom right in when placing via points or do so if they create loops.

There will always be a reason for these sorts of issues, and it's normally because the user has the settings/locations incorrect.

Thanks, that lead me to the reason for my problem. When I create this trip with the car profile I can go through Jerome, when I create it with the RV profile (26' long) I can't. I know that I could drive through there with my RV (I have been driving through there many times with my van) but Basecamp apparently thinks different - and I don't blame Basecamp for it; it's a narrow road with twist and turns. I would have to drive slow and very careful.

Although I disagree with Basecamp in this particular case, I in general think that it is a valuable feature that Basecamp wants to prevent me to drive on certain roads. After some research I found out that several people have been driving through there with their RV's but several other people suggested strongly not to do this (and at least this time I will follow their advice).

I learned something here which is great. Thanks for all of your help!
