Basecamp routes do not show up on RV 770

I'm using Basecamp 4.6.3 (at least I try) on a Mac to create routes for my RV 770. So far I have created two trips and then transferred them to the RV 770. However, they don't show up on the device in Trip Planner. What I noticed when transferring them (one by one) was that the transfer processes took not even one second each which I think is rather short.

Does anybody here know or have an idea how to fix this?

Should I see these routes anywhere on the mounted Garmin volume (they are not in the GPX folder)?

Thanks.

The file is since more than two hours on the device with the device in mass storage mode. The routes have not appeared in Trip Planner. I switched the device now to normal mode and will wait another two hours and check again for the routes. I will keep you posted.

Thanks for looking into this, Sussamb. I am, by the way, the same person that posts under the name desertman in the GPS Review forum. I think I used resucami here because desertman was not available anymore.
  • Then there's definitely an issue with your device. Try calling Product Support for help.

I'm chatting with Garmin Support right now.

Did you place my tmp.gpx file in your GPX folder, and did then the trips show up in Trip Planner on your device?

I've been chatting on Thursday for a very long time with Garmin support. In the end they suggested to perform a "master reset" and try again. I did this and most of my personal data on the device disappeared - but now all three routes were suddenly showing up in Trip Maker (without me having transferred them again). However, new routes could not be transferred, just like before. That is certainly crazy and not a very practical way to get routes onto the device.

A day later I got an email from Garmin support saying that they were able to transfer my routes to a device (but not saying whether this device was an RV 770, which I doubt). They suggested that I try to do it not on Mac but on a Windows PC.

For now I'm very frustrated and not sure what to do. Moreover, I am also seriously struggling with BaseCamp itself about which I started a new thread.
  • Your experience isn't normal, why it's happening I have no idea. I've used BaseCamp for many years, with numerous different devices, both vehicle and handheld, and never had an issue transferring routes. If it were me I'd go back to Garmin and explain it's still not working, they may need to consider swapping your device.

IIRC the issues with Basecamp/RV770 incompatibility were already addressed in a previous thread several months ago. The basic issue is that an RV770 user pays a premium price for a device that has route avoidance settings for large and/or heavy vehicle routing, but may not have a setting for basic automobile routing. The user manual is somewhat unclear on whether the default Profile (no PLUS +) option is suitable for basic (no avoidances) TOAD (towed) automobile routing.

As previously reported on these Basecamp forum threads, Basecamp routing does not support RV/Trucking route avoidances as built into the RV770 device and may export routing files that are not supported on the device in Plus + Profiles.

I followed the suggestion of Garmin's support and tried to transfer a route on a PC. It had the same - to some extent again very surprising - result.

1.) I installed Basecamp on a PC with Windows 10.
2.) I connected the RV 770 to the PC.
3.) I created a route for an RV.
4.) I sent this route to the device.
5.) Just like before (with my Mac), the device crashed the first time I started it after the transfer in normal mode.
6.) Just like before (with my Mac), the route did not show up in Trip Planner.
7.) Just like before I performed a reset on the device.
8.) Just like before the route showed up in Trip Planner as an imported route when I started the device for the first time after the reset. Also all my Saved Places were still on the device.

I think the important piece here is that the device always crashes once after sending data to it from Basecamp, regardless whether this is done from macOS or Windows.

Additionally strange is that the reset allegedly deletes "all user data" but in reality only deletes some basic settings (language, location) and the vehicle data. Saved routes and saved places do not get deleted.

Altogether this is very strange and not very satisfying. I will also contact Garmin with this information again.

PS: I just read that there is a new Basecamp for macOS version (4.7.0). I downloaded it, created a new route with it, and sent it to the device. No difference to version 4.6.3 - the device crashes at first, then the route does not show up, then - after a reset - the route does show up.
  • Saved routes and saved places don't always get deleted, it depends how they were created. If sent for example by BaseCamp they are generally sent in a file named temp.gpx. That file isn't deleted by a master reset so any data sent by BaseCamp won't be deleted. Only data created on the device itself will be deleted.

The fact your device is crashing again suggests a device issue as that's not normal, I'd be pressing Garmin to replace it.
