Will BaseCamp Be Upgraded To 64-bit?

Apple has been warning people that the next MacOS after High Sierra (v10.13.x) will no longer run 32-bit programs. In fact, Apple has stopped accepting 32-bit programs for sale in the App Store. After High Sierra the MacOS will only run 64-bit programs. This has been coming for a long time so it's not as if Apple is springing this on people. But BaseCamp (v4.6.3) is a 32-bit program. That means it won't run on future versions of the MacOS.

I've done an online search but I can't find anything from Garmin about getting a 64-bit release of BaseCamp or some new program to take BaseCamp's place that is natively 64-bit. Has anyone on this forum heard anything?

I like BaseCamp. I use it weekly if not more often than that and I'd hate to lose it. I suppose I could keep High Sierra on an external drive or a partition of my internal drive along with the 32-bit BaseCamp but that's a hassle having to reboot to the other drive just to use one program. Garmin is abandoning Garmin Adventues and Cloud Service in May of 2018 a service I've used extensively to post my Adventures for friends to follow and use. I sure hope Garmin isn't abandoning BaseCamp, too.
  • Without marketing language:
you were totally surprised that there are 64 bit Os and that Apple would force developers in supporting it on ;acOS after doing the same on iOS? And you will do nothing in advance but only sit and watch?

on iOS you had to react due to the big customer base, on macOS we are not important enough I predict.
The same like WiFi problems on Index scale: not enough publicity to be forced to react, last action a year ago.

basecamp on macOS is still featurewise behind windows. Why cant you bring those on par and compile in 64Bit? Two Fliegen eine Klappe.
  • GarminJH,

Thanks for the information on 64 bit Basecamp. Thanks for the development of a free application equal to the windows version. I fell sure there will be a 64 bit version of basecamp. Sure it more than a compile, but you have someone removing adventures and cloud services, when they recompile they will compile as 64 bit and work out any bugs in my opinion. It's obvious Garmin adventures and cloud services did not attractive enough users to continue support. I bet most people complain about the removal have not used either service in years. If Garmin was abandoning basecamp they would not be removing Adventures and cloud services from the Mac and Windows app, they would just turn off the servers.

I've been using BaseCamp for years, and would be very disappointed if I had to choose between continuing to use it and upgrading to MacOS 10.14. BaseCamp keeps me in the Garmin family, and if BaseCamp goes away I'll have to start looking ....

It's now time for Garmin to do something about Homeport and Basecamp to run correctly on Mac computers. Now, each time i am running these software on my MacBook pro under Mac OS 10.13.4 i have warning message telling me "Homeport (or basecamp) is not optimized for your computer. Contact Garmin for update your application". More than that, the two softs are now taking half an hour to read the charts on the sdcard inserted in my GPSMap 78sc and freezing too often. Now the deadline is really here, and if nothing is done, one day I will be obliged to renew my gps, and if nothing is done, that will not be a garmin device, unfortunately.
  • I doubt if there will be a 64 bit version.

Good to know I was wrong so you Mac owners should be ok :)
  • 4.7.0 didn't go 64 bit and didn't fix the perpetual pop-up asking to scan my Time Machine shares.
  • No, Garmin say they'll convert to 64 bit 'later this year'. See the link posted above.
  • The current version of MacOS is the last that fully supports 32-bit apps. If Garmin doesn’t upgrade BaseCamp to 64-bit it will not work with future versions of MacOS.

HamR; same for me, BaseCamp keeps me in the Garmin family. Please Garmin, make BaseCamp 64 bits in 2018. Great application! Using it for years now. Would also be very dissapointed to look for something else which has the same features! Keep on the good work Garmin.
