Will BaseCamp Be Upgraded To 64-bit?

Apple has been warning people that the next MacOS after High Sierra (v10.13.x) will no longer run 32-bit programs. In fact, Apple has stopped accepting 32-bit programs for sale in the App Store. After High Sierra the MacOS will only run 64-bit programs. This has been coming for a long time so it's not as if Apple is springing this on people. But BaseCamp (v4.6.3) is a 32-bit program. That means it won't run on future versions of the MacOS.

I've done an online search but I can't find anything from Garmin about getting a 64-bit release of BaseCamp or some new program to take BaseCamp's place that is natively 64-bit. Has anyone on this forum heard anything?

I like BaseCamp. I use it weekly if not more often than that and I'd hate to lose it. I suppose I could keep High Sierra on an external drive or a partition of my internal drive along with the 32-bit BaseCamp but that's a hassle having to reboot to the other drive just to use one program. Garmin is abandoning Garmin Adventues and Cloud Service in May of 2018 a service I've used extensively to post my Adventures for friends to follow and use. I sure hope Garmin isn't abandoning BaseCamp, too.

No more updates to Garmin BaseCamp, no 64bit version And worst of all older devices not supported on garmins new Explore app!

I apologize for the delays and confusion regarding the 64-bit update for BaseCamp. Other than the expected time frame that was previously mentioned in the support article at https://support.garmin.com/?faq=h2GdyqqKN11m0JielTs4V9, the information still stands. The program can be used currently despite the warning message that appears, and we are continuing to work on the 64-bit update.

Once we have a version available for download we'll make sure to post it in the Mac BaseCamp forum.

I am not even sure the part about "The program can be used currently despite the warning message" still applies anymore. As of the last Mojave update I did, Basecamp just crashes immediately upon trying to open it. It seems like maybe the time for Garmin to have updated it has come and gone and they are just leaving it to wither on the vine.
  • Basecamp still works fine on my MacBook Pro with Mojave 10.14.3. It's the next version of MacOS that will not run 32-bit apps.

I am on 14.4.4 in order to try to resolve another issue. Might be something in that version? I guess I will have to wait and see if it gets "fixed." The problem may lay with Appe/Mojave 14.4.4

  • Mojave is currently 10.14.3.
  • I put the question of the 64-bit upgrade of Basecamp and the other 32-bit apps to Garmin Australia. The reply says in part ...

"Garmin is currently working to update these applications to use 64-bit software to avoid any possible future compatibility issues. We are continuing to work on getting an update to resolve this issue released."

    So there is hope.

With nothing much to go on short of reading about this in the forums and Garmin staying mostly silent, I think hope is fleeting.

Having just purchased a brand new Garmin 770, this is most disappointing. I'm trying to use Base Camp on my Mojave-based MacBook and finding the experience disappointing.

I had originally come to the forums to search for how to enter lat/lng into Base Camp, but that doesn't seem to work either. I wonder if this is related to the software being woefully out of date.

I'm also a bit shocked that it appears Garmin expects me to pay for satellite imagery (Birds eye view?) that is free on Google and a few other mapping tools.

Are others using different planning tools and sending GPX files to the Garmin?
  • Basecamp 4.6.3 works fine on my Mojave MacBook. Garmin removed some useful functions in 4.7.0 such as "View in Google Earth" so I am continuing to use 4.6.3 to see data in Google Earth satellite imagery. I use Basecamp almost daily as a trip planner so I am hoping that if and when Garmin releases a 64-bit version it is not as crippled as version 4.7.0.
