I built routes in trip planner in Basecamp and then exported/transferred them to my Nuvi 1490. I went to My Data, Import Routes on the Nuvi and selected the route to import so it would show up to be selected for driving. I got an error that two many routes were selected (1). I checked the memory available and there is 1.58gb on the internal device memory and 11gb on the SD card so memory shouldn't be a problem. Each route is not more than a couple of hundred MBs. I have done this in the past with other routes and it has worked fine so I am at a loss. I'm on a MAC Air which I have used before. I used Finder to look at the files on each device and they are there but they won't import for use. In Basemap, when I click on Nuvi Maps, the routes show up and when I click on SD Card Maps, they some show up there. I've searched the net and find no help. Not sure what to do from here. On another point, when I go to My Date and Import Routes there are multiple inputs there of the same routes because I couldn't find them initially and exported/transferred a couple of times. I would like to eliminate the extras, but see no way to do so either in Basecamp, Garmin Express or in Finder since the routes don't seem to be separate inputs. Help. Thanks.
Seems like you're in a bit of a mess. I suggest you start again. Delete all the gpx files in the GPX folder of your device and the card. As you're on a mac ensure you empty all appropriate trash folders. Now disconnect your device and boot it. Use the menus to delete any routes you don't want. Now switch off and use BaseCamp again to send the relevant data.
Sussamb, Thanks for the reply. Before I do what you recommend, I wanted to clarify something. If I delete the GPX folders on the device and on the card, will that not also delete all my waypoints and other routes, or are those in another file like temp.gpx? On my 1490, importing routes from Basecamp is a two step process. First, I transfer from Basecamp which puts the routes on the 1490. Then I have to go to MyData and say import the routes I want to before they are usable routes. Once the routes are usable, I can delete them. But it is the MyData list that I can't get rid of. I'm still learning what files are what. Again, thanks.
No. Your favourites etc can only be deleted via the menus on your device. Deleting gpx files won't change them. Without going into too much detail your data on your device is stored in memory inaccessible to you apart from via the menus, gpx files are either one way copies of that data or files you've placed there in some way.
Sussamb, Ok, I deleted all of the .gpx files in the GPX folders on the device and on the card. I disconnected from the computer, rebooted the device and there weren't any routes/trips that I wanted to delete that had been imported. Tried again to put in the new route and got the exact same error code. The routes I want to delete are the ones shown in Tools/My Data. There are two parts regarding routes: 1st is Delete Selected Routes and if that is selected, the only route shown are those that have already been imported and usable. The other route option is Import Routes and when that is selected it looks like all routes that were transferred or exported from Basecamp are listed there, but there is only one option and that is to import any selected route. There are a lot more routes shown there than are shown in the Delete Selected routes section and those available to use. It is the list shown under the "Import Routes" list that I want to delete. So, I still have the same issue, unable to import routes that have been transferred from Basecamp without getting the error that two many routes were selected (1), even though only one route was selected to import. Also, when I deleted all the .gpx files and rebooted, all the imported routes were still on the 1490 (and as you say can only be deleted from the device, but what was I doing when I deleted all the .gps files? Finally, what is the difference between exporting the route/trip to the device and transferring it to the device. Could that be a problem? I've done it both ways. Really appreciate your help.
Imported routes are in the memory you can't access. Deleting the gpx files removes files sent to your device for you to import so if you've deleted all gpx files there should be nothing for you to select to import.
Since you say you still have some when you do a MyData then do a search on your device and card for any other gpx files. If you still can't find any you'll need to do a master reset to clear the list.
Sussamb, first let again thank you for all your help. If I had hair , I would be pulling it our right now:D I went back, attached the 1490 to my computer and looked for .gpx files in Finder (I'm on a MAC). On the device under the GPX folder there is now a Current.gpx file(1.5MB) that was created yesterday (I assume after I rebooted the device); a Temp.gpx file (276KB), also created yesterday and an Archive folder with 20 .gpx files named 251.gpx to 270.gpx. Somehow, I missed deleting that one yesterday. Each file in the Archive folder is between 2.4 and 2.7MB. The card had no .gpx files on it, only a GPX folder. After checking that, I set Finder to show Hidden files. When I did that, there is a Hidden Trash file on the device that has the following .gpx files: Current.gpx (1.6MB), Position.gpx (820 bytes) and temp.gpx (453KB). No other hidden files/folders had .gpx files on the device. I then looked at the card hidden files and also found a hidden Trash file. That file had all the routes I had deleted yesterday by moving them to the computer trash file. So, do I need to remove all those files in the Device and card hidden trash files? Finally, what is the difference between exporting a route/trip and transferring a route/trip from Basecamp to the device. I know how to do it, but the question is are they handled differently or? Is one way better than the other? Thanks again
Sussamb, 1. Ok, I went back in through Finder and deleted every .gpx file I could find. I rechecked both hidden and unhidden files and could find no .gpx files. 2. Rebooted, went to MyData, Import Routes and nothing was there but a message "No Data Available" 3. Went to MyData, Delete Routes and the routes/trips I wanted are still there. Tested by going to main page and selected Where To, Routes and selected one. Chose show on map and it showed so the data appears good. 4. Reconnected the Nuvi to my computer and rechecked for .gpx files in Finder. There was one .gpx file on the Nuvi called Current.gpx(1.5MB) that was created today when I rebooted (step 2) 5. Connected to Basecamp and transferred one route/trip to the Nuvi 6. Disconnected and rebooted the Nuvi. Went to Tools, MyData, Import Routes. The route I had just transferred was there along with the routes I had kept but hadn't shown up in step 2 above. When I selected the route I just transferred and said Import, I got the same error message: too many items selected (1). So, it looks like it still isn't working. You mentioned in one of your previous posts I may need to do a Master Reset. Is that the next step? Before I do that I have a couple of questions. 1. Before I do a Master Reset, I would like to back up my Favorite places (not the routes). When a backup is done in Garmin Express, is the previous backup rewritten completely with the new data or is just new information added to the previous backup? 2 If I delete all my routes using the MyData, Delete Routes and then remove all the .gpx files again and reboot the resulting Current.gpx file should not contain any routes, correct? If I then backup with Garmin Express, the backup should only include my Favorite places and not the routes, correct? (Assuming your answer to #1 is that an existing backup is completely rewritten) 3. Then when I do a Master Reset, I can put My Favorites (without routes) on the pristine Nuvi by reinstalling the backup from question 2 above, is that correct? Is there anything else I can do/check before doing a Master Reset? Would the data in each of these trips/routes be causing the problem if there were some duplicate points? Memory does not seem to be the problem since there is still 1.58gb on the Nuvi 1490 and 11gb on the card. Really appreciate your help.
Backing up via Express will back up all your data. Why you're having an issue with one route in particular I have no idea. Your nuvi can import up to 10 routes I think although you can have many more in MyData waiting to be imported. I'm not familiar with the error you're getting so difficult to advise much further.
Is it possible that Basecamp has converted your few route points to a multi-hundred point file by converting the line to a track? Opening gpx files in a text editor should let you determine the number of route points in each file, whether created in Basecamp or the device.
