Importing RV760 Waypoints into Basecamp

I've read every forum topic I can find on the RV760 (and other Nuvi models) in an attempt to find a way to import waypoints I create on the RV760 into Basecamp. I can do it with my other GPSr but not the 760. I've changed the MTP mode, the RWSF mode (and changed back) and shown invisible files, but the waypoints don't appear anywhere.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Fred
  • When you say they don't appear anywhere can you clarify exactly what is happening? I assume they appear on your device? When you plug your device in and run BaseCamp is your device shown? If so what data does show when you select it?

Have you tried simply importing current.gpx into BaseCamp?
  • SUSSAMB - yes, they are in the device. They are also visible when I'm plugged into the computer. They do not appear in Finder anywhere and I tried importing the last 2 gpx files as well as current. The two gpx files (tracks) imported fine but current wouldn't. That's why I'm asking if there is some way to import the waypoints.

Actually, it just occurred to me that I may be calling them the wrong thing. I am trying to import Saved locations (that were created on the device) from the RV760 into Basecamp.

  • If your device is showing in BaseCamp do the waypoints show when you select the device?

If so you should be able to drag/drop them from there into a BaseCamp list.
  • SUSSAMB - I somewhat misspoke on my last comment (too late at might). The locations are NOT visible in Basecamp when plugged into my computer. I confused them with another GPSr where they are.

On a related note, when I create a new waypoint in BC and then transfer it to the RV760. It is visible in BC UNTIL I disconnect the RV760. If I then replug it and select it in BC, the waypoint is no longer visible BUT it is still on the RV760. It has to be some special place that these Saved Locations are being stored that even when I exposed the RWSF location, I couldn't find them.

    Any ideas?

  • If you're doing what you say then there is something wrong. All 'saved locations' are in the file named current.gpx, although that is a one way copy of what is held in the device in inaccessible memory. Your device uses the stuff you can't access, but writes current.gpx into the GPX folder so that you can access the data. Now it's possible that for some reason the RV760 models aren't doing that correctly, but you should still be able to import current.gpx into BaseCamp to see if that's the case. Alternatively if you can post it here I'll have a look at it.
  • @SSUSAMB - I'll get back to you after another try. It's back out in my truck and I don't want to wake the wife getting it :)

I had previously tried importing it, but maybe I did something wrong. Will try again in about 90 minutes.

    Thanks for the help,

    Fred
  • @SUSSAMB - okay, reattached the RV760 to my computer and copied the current.gpx file to my drive. Started BC and attempted to import the file and got a generic error message that it could not be imported.

I again attached the RV760 to my computer and after clicking on it in the left sidebar, I transferred the waypoints, but nothing transferred (I had tried this before). I tried to find the Saved Locations by viewing on the map (I had tried this before but forgot what happened) and the locations are NOT visible.

I opened the current.gpx file with BBEdit getting an "incorrectly formed UTF-8 file" message and did a search of the file for a particular location that I had set recently and found it.

So, not sure what to do next. I can create the locations in BC, but would rather find a way to grab them "normally". I can't attach the current.gpx file because it's too big (2.3MB).

  • Delete current.gpx then reboot your device so it recreates current.gpx

Hopefully that will provide a correctly formatted file.
  • SUSSAMB - no joy. I attached the RV760 to the computer, deleted the current.gpx (and emptied Trash), removed the RV760 from the computer and restarted it.

I then copied the new current.gpx to the computer, ejected the RV760 and tried again. Opening the file in BBEdit resulted in the same error and trying to import into BC resulted in the same error that it could not be imported.

Any other suggestions? I'm really surprised by this issue as I never had it with any other GPS.

  • No, the only thing you could try is contact product support. It could be a known issue with the RV760.
