Just recently I've noticed when planning a Trip or Route, Basecamp will sometimes fail to route along roads, but gives me "as the crow flies" aerial route. I'm running Basecamp 4.6.3 on MacBook Pro running Sierra 10.12.5 with City Navigator North America NT 2018.2 map. Problem started when planning trip across US border to Canada in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Now I'm seeing same problem intermittently elsewhere in US. Haven't had any previous issues running Basecamp on MBP or iMac for ~ 2 years. Any suggestions?
Can you post an example? It may be the map is at fault, which is more likely than BaseCamp. Having said that have you tried an uninstall then reinstall of BaseCamp? It's very quick and sometimes resolves issues that have suddenly cropped up?
Thanks for the suggestion. I did try uninstall/reinstall with Basecamp, but same issue. See attached screenshot showing "road" routing in US but "direct" routing in Canada. There was one exception in "road" route from Fredericton to Cape Breton, when I was experimenting with starting with 2 waypoints in Canada.
Notice the shading illustrating Map Coverage. I thought that North America maps would include Canada and Mexico. Do you suppose that is the problem? Is there a way to "activate" the Canadian maps?
Yes, it looks like the map as you don't appear to have the full NA map installed. Check your device and see exactly which map it came with, as there are numerous 'US map' versions. At a guess you only have the lower 49 states
You're right! My Nuvi 55LM was only equipped with Lower 49 States, so all the North American updates I've downloaded are only the States. If I buy separate Canada maps from Garmin website, can I turn on both US & Canada maps in Basecamp at same time to plan route across the border?
No. Unfortunately BaseCamp can only have one map active. You'd need to buy a map that included both or plan your trips in two parts then join them together.

In my opinion, instead of buying the Canada map for $60, a better choice is to spend a few dollars more for a Garmin model that has the full NA map. You could recover some of the extra cost by selling your nuvi 55. Look at factory refurbs for the best deals.
1) With original firmware the two digit Nuvi 55/56 devices when set to Direct routing could provide a route that was direct only to the first stopover waypoint. Routing to all other points in a multipoint direct route could then revert to road routing. 2) The routing shown in this thread starts from Prince Edward Island, Canada, which according to one map on my computer has only two ways to get off the island: Toll Ferry or Toll Road.
I would first check the Nuvi 55 routing and road type setup options, and then perhaps download a detailed map of the small area of Canada that is needed in the "mapless" part of the initial adventure. Once the route is created in the Nuvi 55, the underlying maps can be changed if needed. Good luck, and don't be too quick in getting rid of the Nuvi 55.
