BaseCamp (Mac) - Problem creating routes, especially off-road

First-time poster.
I'm trying to route a path through parts of the Utah/Arizona desert.
Using the latest BaseCamp (and the 100k maps from the connected 64st), I can create way points, but can't connect them properly. When I try, they off-road way points try to connect to a highway, instead of the next off-road way point. Clear as mud? I made a video to explain my problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdn0BBXDmTg (1 minute 50 seconds). Would appreciate any and all guidance!
Thanks! - Troy
  • That's normally an indication that you have a routing activity selected but you're trying to route off road while using a map that doesn't have routeable tracks that can be used. Switch BaseCamp to direct activity and all should be well.

However Garmins 100K map isn't routeable, so are you sure that is selected? I can't tell from your video whether it is or not, or whether you have some other map selected?

You need to be using Tracks not Routes if you are riding off road out there. CNNA does a very good job of depicting routeable roads out west in my experience. But tracks are the way to go!

I would also download the free OSM (Open Street Maps) for the areas you are going to ride. Much more up to date than the Garmin Topo 100.

After trying Sussamb's and AugustFalcon's suggestions, look carefully at the Off Road and ATV options in both Basecamp and the 64st menus. Separate adjustments may need to be made in BaseCamp and the device. I looked at this at one time when someone with (IIRC) a Rhino was having problems and thought that the off road programming may be different for the two devices.

Good luck, and be sure to see if you have an underlying routable base map lurking under the overlaid map. Then reset all routing options to default and start over.

I appreciate the help! In an effort to troubleshoot things, I created 3 routes in downtown areas. Its a mess. I MUST be doing something wrong. Here's a video of my 3 experiments mostly failing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOhxpTdG9RE
  • Something isn't right but I can't tell what. It looks like you have a routeable map selected but BaseCamp is routing via the basemap, but that shouldn't happen.

When you click on maps in the toolbar what is listed? Which map is selected?

Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling BaseCamp? Note doing so won't delete your data.

Wow, just watched your video... that is really messed up!

For a start we need to narrow down what might be causing the problem. So, what happens, if anything, when you disconnect your device and try to make a route?

I think SUSSAMB has it right. You are viewing Topo 100 which is a non-routable map but BaseCamp is routing using the BaseMap. You can sort of tell because the BaseMap typically only has major roads, i.e., US numbered roads and maybe some state numbered roads. If your waypoint is not on one of those roads the basemap will route directly too the closest road and then route using the roads it knows about until the route gets as close as it can to your destination and then the route jumps off the know road and goes directly to the destination.

I would suggest that you put a routable map on your device and/or in BaseCamp and try this exercise again. Open Street Map has free downloadable routable topos. Google it....

Another thing to try would be to disable the BaseMap on the device (its under the Maps menu item according to the manual)

I am struggling hard with learning Basecamp. I'm good with programs but i feel like Garmin has left a lot up to the user to figure out how to utilize the full power of this program. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to learn this program other than pulling my hair out with shotty 3rd party youtube stuff and piles of forum discussions?
