Apologies if posted in the wrong place but I couldn't find a maps forum. I've just bought a Montana 680t which came with Topo Recreation map of Europe v4.There is no scale on the map and I notice that Garmin offer Topoactive Europe and Topo UK and Ireland Light v5 but once again no scale. Does anyone know how these maps differ in details and scale? I'm wanting a map for footpath and trails for my off road wheelchair and could just buy the OS Discovery 1:25000 covering the Lakes which is the one I'd really need. TIA
I guess that it is detail I am after then. From the Garmin description it is difficult to know how they differ, I'm after footpaths and bridleways really, I don't think that the Topo seems to have them?. I'll have to go for the OS Discoverer series I think.
Looking at OSM they seem to be mainly towns, I'm wanting off road trails unfortunately. I'm planning on making routes/tracks in Basecamp as gpx files then sending to the Montana and following the route/track when I am out, hence wanting greater detail. I can't foresee a need to get it to direct me it would be useful if I strayed from the track I send to it but isn't essential.
I just need to get my head around routes and tracks now :)
Here is another possibility and a process that I use a lot in my work as a surveyor. In the back country where I work there are many dirt roads and paths that do not show on any Garmin maps. I use the "Add Path" button on Google Earth and create tracks on their excellent digital topo that I think will get me to a section corner with the minimum amount of brush chopping. Then I export that track to a KMZ file. That KMZ file can be imported to BaseCamp and it will display on my 24K Topo and then printed to give me a hardcopy showing the entire track. BaseCamp will also send that track to my GPSmap78S which I use to guide me. I know that this process has always been accurate for me because when physically standing on the trail the GPS cursor has always been on the track as shown on the GPS screen.
