Route recalculation

I bought the nüvi® 3597LMTHD because is was not suppose to recalculate or change routes uploaded from basecamp. It worked well until about 6 months ago. Suddenly routes uploaded into the Nuvi trip planner were being changed. It only took me 6 months to figure out the problem. If I create a route in BaseCamp
with avoid interstates, the Nuvi does not avoid the interstates. It follows the route BaceCamp creates if the interstate advoidance was not checked. If I create the route using shaping waypoints and leave the interstate avoidance unchecked, it works fine. My Nuvi does not have an opinion to avoid interstate. Seems like when the Nuvi was new, it asked me about recalculating the route, if it did, an update killed the option. I am think if my Nuvi had the avoid interstates options, the problem would be gone.

Does the group agree with my summation? Anyone know if an updated NUVI has the option to avoid interstate.
  • My 2508 and now my DriveSmart don't recalculate routes sent by BaseCamp but then I keep the avoidances in BaseCamp the same as on my devices. Also note that should your nuvi deviate from the planned route it will be recalculated based on the settings of your device.

Avoid motorways can be selected, on a UK model, no idea about others I'm afraid.
  • The nuvicam has the same advoidance as my nuvi 3579 or other Nuvi line. The nuvi line does not have an avoidance for just interstates. I am told the outdoor models allow you to match route calculations in BaseCame and you have to match the upload on your outdoor GPS to BaseCamp. If everything matches the route is not recalculated. I think a better term than recalculated is route not changed. As I understand any route created in BaseCamp can be uploaded and the GPS will not change the route.

I'm pretty sure the Nuvi line does not require you to match routing preferences. I think BaseCamp sends the nuvi the preferences for each route. This is good but it's not good that the Nuvi does not have interstate advoidance. This means routes created in BaseCamp with interstate advoidance checked will not avoid interstates if uploaded. If I use shaping waypoints in BaseCamp, the route uploads and does not change.

    Any corrections or addition?

Just finished up a Memorial weekend ride. My brother and I decided to ride the Mid-Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route developed by Butler Maps. I downloaded the GPS waypoint file from Butler, which is in the form of a track file. Since my GPS (Drivesmart 61) does not accept tracks, I had to convert them to routes. In addition, because we were riding north to south and they were created south to north, I had to reverse the direction of the routes. All of this went smoothly. I transferred the segments to my GPS and we were off. When we were ready to start the route, I was about .25 miles from the actual start point. I loaded the Saved route and arrrrgh!!!! The route recalculated!! All that work to follow a very specific path was lost and it kind of screwed up the weekend. Is there ANY way to stop the GPS unit from recalculating a route?
  • If you convert a track to a route you end up with a start and end point only, so any recalculation may cause issues. Best way is to create a new route based on start and end points, then insert via or shaping points so the route follows the track, then send that to your device.
