Basecamp - route over sidewalk!....

Hi
I am planning a route. There is a street and then a zebra.... after crossing the zebra there is a sidewalk and if I *cross* the sidewalk I am in another street that is only accessible by car if I do a long way but by foot it is only 3 meters

I am planning an *HIKING* route so I CAN walk over the sidewalk!....

How can I plan this is basecamp?... should be possible because it is hiking!... not travelling with car...

Any Ideas?

Still I ask myself then why there are activities...
The way I see it that's why it is called Walking or Hiking: one can over a sidewalk and reach another road--- if with Hiking and Walking I can only follow the map roads then it is useless to have them... just create 2 Actvities: direct and Car and then you can add minor details in the options but they define the basics

In any case: thanks for your response (the rant above was to Garmjn :-). )

The issue is not BaseCamp but the map. If the map doesn't have it as routeable it can't be used by BaseCamp.

I understand the point you are making but again: Hiking as activity for me would mean ideally that the SW would allow me to switch step by step between "direct" and "routed" so that i can cover these cases ---

To explain further...

Routing in Basecamp uses the network of "ways" (highways, roads, paths, etc) that are encoded in the map you are using.

Think of these ways as threads on a spider web. You can only use threads to get from one part of the web to another.

When you are using routing, you are telling Basecamp that you only want to use the ways on the maps.

The ways on maps are categorized as being appropriate for different modes of travelling (car, motorcycle, walking).

Choosing an activity identifies the subset of ways you want Basecamp to use for routing,

The problem you are having here is that there is no way on the map that corresponds to the zebra crossing. As far as Basecamp understands, the zebra crossing doesn't exist.

Essentially, wanting to use the zebra cross means you want to go "off road" (or "off way").

When you want to do that, use the "direct routing' feature and draw your track/route "free hand" (that lets you go anywhere you, without being restricted to using the ways on the map).

It does.

Lay out your route for "hiking".

Then, double click on the route.

Then, in the list of "via points" double click on the via point you want to start using "direct routing".

Then, add new via points between that point and the next via point (which starts using "hiking") do draw your off-road track.
