new to basecamp and bye bye

Hi there,

I am working on the computer a lot for many years now - as a developer, professional user and enthousiast - working professionally with video and audio editing programs. i am pretty new to Garmin using it for cycling - but one thing is for sure - BASECAMP is by far the worse application i've been trying to get familiar with for the last decade.
I mean - i am not a total idiot - so i am convinced that at least the very basic functions one should be able to discover just by working with it - NO WAY
i am still not able to just delete a way point (those little black dots that you should remove or move to make your track go into the right direction without riding in a circle)
A point in your track that is in the way - DELETE - to make it disappear - this is the most basic thing and i still don't know how to do it without deleting the whole track.

I just give it up - nice try Garmin - but this is far beyond any expectation - ridiculous i would call it

Hi Jens, do you want someone to assist, or just stating that you are done? There are a few BaseCamp experts on this forum that most likely can assist you with specific issues.

Yes, if you want help then ask. I've been using BaseCamp for many years to plan routes for my handhelds and auto units. Does both jobs really well.

Deleting a point is very easy ...

Hate to say it, he's right.

There's an old saying that goes like this:

"UI is like a joke. If you have to explain it, it's not that good."

While it gets the job done, it's a pretty horrible user experience.

Again, if you want help please ask, BaseCamp is a doddle to use so you must be doing something wrong somewhere if you're struggling with it.

However a bit like MS Word, as well as the simple stuff there is a wealth of other features that take a bit of effort to understand. Those who want a simple word processor can find alternatives, and if all you want is a simple route planner then there are other options out there also.

I totally agree that BaseCamp is one of the worst programs I have ever worked with. How do you for example sort your saved tracks by date? It is not possible!

Personally I see no need for that but if enough folks do and suggest it you might see it implemented.

"Saved tracks"? Like, recorded trips?

It seems Basecamp is more focused on planning trips than being a repository for recorded trips.

What date are you sorting on?

My GPS device, a Navigator 5, automatically archives track segments as I ride, naming them as "Active Log: " with the date and time of the last point recorded for the track appended to the name. If I choose to save a track segment on the device it is up to me to give it a name so it is very easy to add the date to the name. Note that when I import those track segments into BaseCamp they automatically sort by their name and in the case of the automatically generated track segments that means they show up in date/time order.

Many of the earlier devices did not include the date in the automatically generated track file segments. And, because of memory limitations of the devices they would automatically strip out the date/time entries from the saved track. There was no way to determine when the track was ridden, hence, no way to ascribe a date to it.

Tracks that are created by hand may or may not have date/time groups associated with their track points and furthermore in some cases all the track points have exactly the same date/time stamp.

Well, since no body answered your question, I suppose I can. There is a way to sort your data (Tracks in this case) in the LIST.

At the top of the LIST column opposite the List Name is a small 'gear' icon. Click on it, you will see the option to "Sort By Date:...".

It's often less embarrassing to ask a question rather than to state a false impression.

Tried that before I posted above and it didn't appear to work for me so I wrongly concluded it was broken. :(

Just tried it again with many more track files and this time it worked for most, the only exceptions being the files it failed on last time. Took a look inside the nonsorting track files and all had the same date/time group on the first track point! There were no date/time groups on any of the other track points. Other tracks with only the first track point having a date/time group sorted properly as long as the date/time groups were unique.
