How can I get BaseCamp to PROPERLY allow an alternate route?

I want to take an Interstate Highway (I-205) that takes me around a major city (Portland, OR) instead of taking the Interstate Highway (I-5) that goes through that major city. I tried using BaseCamp to create such a route for me, but it keeps choosing I-5 that goes through Portland. When I drag the route from I-5 to I-205, BaseCamp then creates a detour that takes me onto I-205, but eventually sets me up for a u-turn that then routes me back to I-5 and through Portland. In other words, it doesn't just move the route to the other highway, it creates a second route that wants me to take both highways, one then the other.
  • You may need to put in a couple of via points to force BC to take that route, or set up the unwanted route as an area avoidance, assuming you have a device that also let's you set up areas/routes to avoid?

Note in the Win version of BC the area avoidance tool isn't in the toolbar area by default, it needs to be first selected in View, Toolbars. I'm not sure if this is the same for a mac.
  • Bart,

As a former Reedie I know the area and just tried a route in BC on my Mac to see what's up. My first attempt produced a "spaghetti loop" on 205. The way the map is drawn in the Portland area, the north and south lanes of 205 are very close together, so it is essential that when you drag the route it lands on the southbound side.

Once I fixed that, it worked fine.

  • Thanks for taking the time to help! Both suggestions worked, and something else I learned is to plan the trip in one direction only instead of roundtrip. I was getting confused by the "return" route not changing when the "to" route was moved. Both were in the same color and it looked like a mess on the map. I intend to just reverse my route to come back home, and that should take care of it.
  • Yes, BC (and many Garmin GPSes) hate circular loops with the same start and finish point.

    Hello Bart,

I know this is an old post but I do not think you can just "reverse" a route because you would be going against the oncoming traffic, etc :p
You will need to create the return route separately.

I have reversed routes and it recalculates it using the correct roads (no oncoming traffic).

True....I have reversed routes on simple roads but if a freeway is involved (the OP, Bart, wanted to use I-205) it makes a real mess.
  • Dragging route in BC using trip planner to modify is chaotic

Running BC Version 4.2.4 (4.2.4) on an Early 2011 I5 13" MBP OS Sierra 10.12.1 No crashes BTW.
Using trip planner and when I drag the default route that was created after entering the start and destination addresses in order to modify it the way I want to go BC draws loop de loops and ignores logic in following the road that I am dragging it to, see image.
Reading this thread I see that adding a VIA point can resolve this so how do I add these VIA points in BC using trip planner?

    Thanks, Bob

  • Difficult to know from your image but possibly in your case you've dropped the additional point on the wrong side of a divided road?
