BaseCamp 4.6.3 Issues With MacOs 10.12 Sierra (wait for 10.12.2 release)

There is a known 10.12 issue with open street maps and BirdsEye imagery on BC 4.6.3 that is causing out-of-memory crashes. We have submitted a bug report to Apple, but have no estimate as to when the issue will be resolved.

If you use Birdseye imagery or some OSMs, then you may want to monitor BaseCamp memory consumption in Activity Monitor and periodically restart the app when you see memory approaching 3GB to avoid crashing. Zooming and panning with OSM and Birdseye generally result with memory growing until the app crashes.

Status updates will be posted to this thread.
  • Good news - MacOS 10.12.2 beta 3 seems to be solving BaseCamp memory leak problem!

I worked yesterday the whole day with BaseCamp, different maps, very detailed zoom etc. - not even one crash! Memory consumed by BaseCamp hardly reached 1GB. On all previous versions 3GB was used in a few minutes (and then boom! - crashed)

Please check and confirm/decline my experience!

    Cheers!

Unfortunately I'm still having a memory leak and constant crashing running Version 10.0.2 public beta 5 (12602.3.12.0.1)
As earlier described I can watch the memory using increase while scrolling around City Nav NA when it gets just over 3gb, BOOM.
This is on a brand new 2016 Macbook Pro with 16gb RAM.
This is unacceptable, I've filing a bug report with the apple feedback hoping something will be done either on the the Apple side or with Garmin, like usual they just blame each other when talking with customer support.
  • Attempt to report a problem with the map when checking the box asking to be emailed a copy of the report a Java error window pops up on Submit. Uncheck the request for email and apparently the report gets sent to Garmin as expected.

Basecamp crashes when syncing to my Montana or 62st

I am at my wits end I can not sync my montana or 62st with my iMac. The issues started recently with the Sierra update, I don't feel like abandoning Garmin completly but this is ridiculous. Is everyone still having issues?

Is there any chance you have a case-sensitive file system on your Mac? The developers of BaseCamp and the Garmin device firmware don't always agree with the exact case to spell device, folder, and file names. For instance BaseCamp won't transfer data to/from a nuvi 1495 if the Mac root filesystem is case sensitive but Garmin Express has no issue.

Does Basecamp still crash on Mac 10.12.3?

I was going to purchase a Garmin GPS unit for hiking and backroad jeeping, but noticed all of the reviews stating that Basecamp crashes on Mac.

Is this still the case? Is there an ETA for a fix? Can I return the Garmin if Basecamp does not work?
  • Depending on where you got it from you can return your Garmin for various reasons, not sure incompatibility with BaseCamp is one of them though. I've not seen any major problems reported with BaseCamp for Mac for a while, but like any program there are always a few systems out there that for some reason don't work with BaseCamp, but these are system specific rather than applying to everyone.
  • BC working with Sierra 10.2.3

I haven't tried every function, but so far, BC 4.6.3 appears to be playing nice with Sierra 10.2.3.

  • The things I am using are working in 10.12.4 Beta 6. Checked just now and Apple is asking that I install Beta 7.

Except for the long standing problem of BC trying to access my networked Time Machine repository. Its hosted on a Mac Mini Server. The image inside the .sparsebundle is a case sensitive filesystem and I've observed Base Camp is case-sloppy with file and device names. Last I tried it wouldn't read/write any of my Garmin GPS's if the Mac's root filesystem was case sensitive. The GPS would mount. Garmin Express would do its thing without issue. But Base Camp would not.

Am not sure why the .sparsebundle filesystem is case sensitive. Created new a couple days ago with brand new MacBook Pro. Perhaps it is because the Mac Mini Server is running case sensitive filesystems? (Clearly that is how all computers should be, especially servers.)
  • Hi!

I’m currently using BC 4.6.3 on my new MacBook Pro 2016, and BC instantly crashes every time I try to view a map that is installed on my eTrex Touch 35.

I doesn’t matter is it’s the preinstalled TopoMap Europe or the City Navigator Europe I recently bought.

This is a new problem, that I newer had have before.
