Basecamp very slow viewing Topo UK and Ireland Light v3 maps from etex30

I have an eTrex 30 with the standard Topo UK and Ireland Light v3 maps installed on to it however when using basecamp it is so slow updating the map if you do anything say zoom out that is it unusable and all I ever get is a spinning wheel. My Mac isn't slow and is fairly new. When I plug the etrex into the Mac is seems to read the maps which inititally took ages however this has been done but it is still very slow. How can I speed this up?

I've never really had any success with basecamp on the mac is it appears to be a very poor piece of software. Is the PC version any better?

You probably have map detail set to highest. I tend to set it to medium when panning etc as that is then much quicker.

Is it possbile to copy the map to my mac so I don't have to plug the etrex in?

You can't copy it to your hard drive but there are numerous threads explaining how to transfer the maps to a dismountable or virtual drive.
