Exporting Tracks from Basecamp to a Nuvi 755

I have a friend who sent me a .GPX file containing an off-road trail. Is it possible to import that file into my 755 Nuvi and use it to guide me on that trail?

I have been successful in importing it into Basecamp and can view the file. I also was able to send & view the contents in Google Earth. But when I try to use Garmin Basecamp to transfer and send the tracks to my 755, selecting Routes, Tracks and Waypoints, I cannot locate the route anywhere in the GPS, let alone get it to work, even though Basecamp says the transfer is complete.

I have gone through the owners manual and it says nothing about how it should be done. Basecamp "Help" tells me nothing more than how to transfer, but not how to use it or where to find the transferred track.

Can someone set me straight on how this should be done, please?

Thanks!
  • It is not possible to import a track on most Garmin automotive devices, including the 755T. They seem to reserve that capability for the handhelds. On a nuvi 755 you can import waypoints (favorites) and routes, but not tracks.

Can the .gpx file I have be converted to a route and transferred to my 755? And, if so, where would I find it located in the Nuvi?
  • Yes, you can convert a track to a route in Base Camp, transfer to the nuvi then on the nuvi menu use Tools > My Data > Import route. Be aware however, that off road routes and off road navigation on an automotive device are awkward at best.

    Great, thanks!

I was able to convert the track to a route, transfer it to the 755 and locate it. No idea as to how well it will work at this point, but at least I have something to work with.

If I were to buy a handheld, would I be able to take a route created with the 755 and transfer that to the handheld? Would it give me turn by turn directions or just function as an electronic map?
  • Yes you could transfer the route but whether it would give you turn by turn directions would depend on numerous factors, including which map was installed on the handheld.

Could you recommend a handheld unit and appropriate maps to to what I would like it to do? What would I look for if you can't recommend?
  • You haven't really said what type of off road activity you are doing. If it is something like cycling or four wheeling, the zumo line (designed for motorcycles) may be more appropriate than a handheld. I believe most zumo models can import tracks.

This discussion is getting off topic for the BaseCamp forum.

I'm now having a related problem with tracks, routes and importing. I'm going to be leading a run (4 wheeling in my Jeep) this Saturday and am having a problem working with .gpx files a friend sent me. He sent two, one with 50 pts and the other with 200 pts and in each there are two parts. Based on what I learned in this thread, I was able to get them transferred into my Nuvi 755T , but when I go to import them, part one comes up with a message that says "Cannot calculate the route". The second part in both .gpx files imports fine and can be used as it should. I've been trying everything to combine both routes into one, or even keeping them separate, and I simply cannot get them to import successfully if part 1 is included.

I wanted to include an image of what the route should look like but, apparently, that's not possible in this forum, is it? I would love to send my two .gpx files to someone to see what they could do with it to correct the problem. Is anyone willing? This run is this Saturday, so time is of the essence.

Any help you can provide would be most appreciated.
  • I suspect it's simply a question of the route being too long or too complicated or a mixture of the two. You could try importing them into BaseCamp and see if you can simplify them?

Would this appear to be too long or complicated? The problem occurs with both the 50pt route as well as with the 200pt route.
