Route creation results in very strange routes

I have the Colorado Hunt View chip, which I use for my base map. I am trying to create routes and am really struggling, so I wonder if I am doing something wrong. Since the chip has routable trails, I use that capability as much as possible. Where the chip does not include the trail, I have tried various methods to draw a route freehand or from waypoint to waypoint, but the results are strange. The route may start at the first waypoint, but then it jumps to a routable trail or road and then back to the waypoint. When I try to connect the next waypoint, it will usually create some complex route that includes a bunch of needless trails. In one instance I was trying to connect waypoints that were about a 1/2 mile apart (hiking) and the resulting route was 16.5 miles long, with all sorts of jumps around the map. Are there settings for route preferences I should be adjusting? Is there a way to turn off auto-routing for certain routes?

Thanks in advance...

    Can't post images of routes

I tried to post images of the routes to show what is happening and my uploads fail. Tried also to upload as an attachment and that failed too. No messages, just "upload failed". Does the image upload feature on this forum work? I know this question is in the wrong thread, but I could not find a thread on how to troubleshoot file uploads.

Change some waypoints to direct routing....

When your intended route leaves a routable portion of the train change the activity type at that waypoint to direct then add direct waypoints to take you along your preferred trail until you get back to a routable trail and then change it at that waypoint back to the original Activity.

On a Mac first create your route using whatever activity you use for on road or, in your case on-a-routable-trail. Then open the Route information pane and select a waypoint where the non-routable path leaves. Once the waypoint is selected in the information pane you will see over on the rightmost portion of the selected waypoint line a small icon which looks like a car or motorcycle or whatever your Base Activity might be. Click on it and change it to Direct. Your track line should change to a straight line. Then use the Option key along with the Hand to drag the Direct portion of the route to your desired path.

Some Garmin GPS devices are not able to handle mixed Routes. Of the handhelds I think only the Montana can. YMMV

    Images usually need external hosting

Nope, never got it to work for me, so, I just upload to SmugMug or some other image hosting service and then use the post editor to insert the link..
