Birds Eye, Base Camp and memory

I'm pretty frustrated and somewhat confused.

I have downloaded a lot of Birds Eye files and keep them on different SD cards for use when I need. When I connect my Oregon 450 to my Macbook Pro, it takes FOREVER - maybe 45 minutes - to load. Apparently it creates a cache file each time you connect. I was losing too much space (like 30 gb) on my HD, so I deleted the CACHE files (/library/caches/com.Garmin.BaseCamp) AND (shouldn't have, don't think) the files in Application Support (/library/Application Support/Garmin/BaseCamp/.jnx files). So the upshot is that although the Birdseye files work fine on my Oregon - they do not show in Base Camp. Basecamp is totally blank, just a box around the area, but no image.

So...my question is: 1) How do I get the Birdseye .jnx files from the Oregon back to Basecamp without downloading the files from scratch? And 2) are others having this painfully SLOW process each time you connect your GPS to your computer? And 3) What can be done about the excessive use of hard drive memory?
