BaseCamp 4.5.2 Poor GX Performance on New Mac

Does anyone know of anything I can do to improve the graphics performance of BaseCamp 4.5.2 running on a Mac please?

I run BC 4.5.2 on my windows 10 laptop and it's very fast but have just installed it on a new Mac (as it's got a beautiful large screen) and the graphics performance is very disappointing....!

Brief description of problem: noticeable delays in painting the next map tile when panning (grey screen until it renders) and laggy zooming - both are pretty instant on my laptop.

Config is:

  • 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display (latest model)
  • 3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB Fusion Drive, AMD Radeon R9 M390 with 2GB video memory, Retina 5K 5120x2880 P3 display
  • OS X El Capitan version 10.11.2
  • Basecamp 4.5.2
  • City Navigator Europe NTU 2016.30 (latest map) - this downloaded and installed locally on machine - no satnav plugged in.

Wondered if there is a config setting somewhere that I can change that will speed it up - maybe data pre-fetch, hardware acceleration, etc?
  • You can look at the 'Disk Cache Size' advanced preference option and make sure you are maxing that out. That may help a little, but that's just the disk cache though. The real culprit is the memory cache and thats significantly smaller and is limited by the fact that BaseCamp is a 32bit app. These retina displays are consuming lots more memory, which caused us to lower the memory cache, resulting in poorer rendering performance. That said, we have made some changes in the upcoming 4.6 release that will help with performance. 4.6 will be out this month.

Another thing you can try is lowering your map detail.
  • Hi Wurth,

I'll give all of that a try and report back.

    Many Thanks, Andy
  • Tried increasing the Disk Cache Size to maximum but that didn't make a scrap of difference. Reducing the map detail level did help a bit, but only at the point when the level of detail was so low that it made the map useless.

I bought a big mac (excuse the pun) thinking that route planning on it would be fab, but it's not that looking that way at the mo so very much hope you're able to deliver significant performance improvements in the next version.

Thanks for the quick response though.
