Original tracks re-appear after renaming to more meaningful name

Hi,

I'm rather new to the Garmin Basecamp software and my Garmin eTrex Touch 25, so bare with me if I ask the obvious :-(
My guess is that this is something that might have been asked before, but I'm writing this new thread as I didn't really know how to describe what my issue is to properly find it.

When I connect my Garmin to may Mac running Garmin Basecamp, I can see the tracks I hiked properly.
For archiving purposes (as long as I have sufficient memory) I'd like to keep them and hence I rename them to something matching my memory.
However, whenever I reconnect my Garmin, all the original tracks (with the original date-time track names) re-appear side-by-side with my renamed ones.
Is there any way I can prevent that and just keep the renamed tracks?

Thanks for any hints / tips to achieve a clean device / collection.

Regards,
Rob.
  • Where are you storing them? I'm not clear whether you're copying them into Basecamp and renaming them or trying to rename them on the device? Either way if you copy them to Basecamp and rename them the ones on your device won't be renamed, is that what you're concerned about?

    Thanks for your response!

It may be my lack of experience, but I try to rename the tracks when I have my device selected in the upper part of the navigation column (where I also see a reference to my cloud and my collection). Therefore I think I'm trying to rename the tracks on the device.

I'm not sure what would be best practice in keeping them for reference. That's why (for now as long as I have storage on my device available) I 'd like to keep my device and computer in sync.
  • Yes, that's renaming them on the device, so when do you see both the old and new names?

Not sure why you want to keep the two in sync though. I copy any tracks etc I wish to keep into folders in Basecamp and then delete them off my device. Equally they take up little space so no need to delete them off your device.

When I rename (or remove the ones I already renamed) all original track names and then disconnect / reconnect my device, I have both: original track names PLUS the ones with the new names.

I still have to figure out the best practice on how to archive the recorded tracks.
I must admit I haven't searched properly for a manual on how to achieve that.
  • Not sure how you describe is happening. Are you able to post a screen shot? One possibility is you're copying the files into BC and then renaming them. This would leave the originals on your device, which you would see when you reconnect. A screenshot would give a better idea of what's happening.

This is what I see, after renaming all my tracks, disconnecting my device and reconnecting it.
  • I assume the dated tracks are your originals and the named ones the ones that you've tried to rename? If so I've no idea why that is happening. If I rename tracks on my Etrex 20 or Montana then I don't get what is happening on your Etrex 20x.

It's possible the 20x deals with this differently. What happens if you delete the original track?

You're right in your assumption ;-)
If I delete the original tracks, they reappear after a disconnect / reconnect :-(

Then your device seems to work differently to earlier ones. Try using the trip planner app on your Etrex to delete the tracks.

Thanks for sticking with me / my thread on this special day ;-)

Anyway, When I switch to the apps on my device, I have two noticeable apps:
    • Activity History
    • Track Management

They may be named differently as I have the Dutch language enabled.
On the Track Management, I only see my renamed tracks!
In Activity History, I onlysee the original track names.

To me it seems like the tracks shown from my device from within BaseCamp, is that it's a combination of these two and it still puzzles me.
