Transfer videos and photos to phone using USB OTG?

I'm thinking of buying a Virb and am a little disappointed that you can't transfer videos or even photos to smartphones with current firmware/mobile app.
Without this I don't see any point choosing the Elite version, because I'm going to use it with my Edge 810. (can create sensor overlays in video edit)

Do you know if this is possible using a USB cable or microSD reader together with USB OTG adapter? I can do that with my DSLR. (My phone supports USB host)
Not a very good solution, but you will at least be able to transfer and share your photos without the use of a computer.

I think you might be able to read the microsd card with a card reader, you would need to pop the battery each time though
I tried connecting the Virb directly with a cable to a usb otg adapter to an android tablet and the usb drive does not appear, or just appears briefly in a file manager before shutting down, with the virb on or off when connecting the mini usb cable. I used the same usb otg adapter to connect a garmin fenix, and the device is correctly mounted, but not the Virb.
