Unable to export large video

Hi,

I'm having trouble exporting a video in Virb Edit. I've recorded 3 hours of video on a Virb XE and combined them all in Virb Edit. I haven't added any effects or overlays, it's just the 12 recorded videos stuck together. It's ~32gb. When I try and export it, it looks like it's going to work (shows 0% progress) then after a while a error box is shown. It never progressed beyond 0%. Here's the last 3 lines from the export log file:

15:23:11 Info Creating Writer
15:23:11 Info Adding writer audio stream
15:23:11 Error src\impl\MediaSampleWriter.cpp line 63 HRESULT -1072875852

I've added VirbEdit.exe to my antivirus's trusted list, but that hasn't helped. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks,
Brett
  • I've just started exporting the first 4 parts of the video rather than all 12 in one go. It appears to be working as it's moved off 0% without an error. I'll report back later with the results.
  • I've been able to export up to 6x 15 minute clips into one video. That's half what I need as the G-metrix won't work if it's not in one video. I haven't tried more to see what the limit is. I've tried all the items in the sticky post and none helped. I've emailed the log file to Garmin. Hopefully there'll be an update to resolve the issue soon.

I'll try again on my PC on the weekend to see if it's due to my laptop (which is well above the minimum specs required).

  • I've just tried the same video on my PC and get the same problem. It still crashes on 0%.

  • This is now becoming near on impossible to edit a video.

I have spent the night adding each clip individually and cutting the clip down to a much smaller duration. My total video duration is now 25 minutes (down from 3 hours) and it still won't play without crashing. I haven't even tried to add any overlays (which I have seen cause it to crash too). I hope Garmin have an update to release soon as the current version (at least with Windows) is not fit for use. Tonight alone I would've sent over 10 error reports to Garmin from Virb Edit crashing (and some crashes didn't even give me the option to send the error report).

There's no point allowing the camera to record longer than 2 hours (or even 2 hours for that matter!) if the software that it's advertised to work with just won't cope. I don't believe this is isolated to me as I've seen other posts listing similar issues and I've tried on two different machines with the same results. I was really looking forward to using the software to edit my videos but as it currently stands I'm now dreading any video editing with it. I'd happily use a different application if it wasn't for the fact that I bought the camera for use with the overlays.

  • I've just installed the latest version (3.2.0) and still can't export the video.

I guess I'll have to keep waiting for an update that works.

Hello Brettkp, sorry things aren't working correctly! From what you have described it almost sounds like one specific video you are using is giving VirbEdit problems. As an experiment, you might try removing each video individually and see if export begins without it. Your export is failing very early in the process, so if export makes any progress, you'll know its not the one you tried and you can move on to the next one. It also sounds like you tried your first 6 videos and they all worked fine, so maybe its in the 7-12 range? Let me know if my hunch about a specific video being the problem is right. Also, you seemed to indicate that a crash was occurring in both export and playback, is that correct? If playback is crashing, does the crash always happen at a specific place in your project, or does it seem random?

Who ever you sent your error log to did not forward it to me I'm afraid. Will you PM it to me so I can take a closer look? Sorry for the inconvenience.
  • Hi Purdington, thanks for your reply. I've managed to export the first 6 clips into one video and also the last 6 clips into one video. When I try to export all 12 into one video it throws an error at 0%. I'll PM you the log file. When trying to edit the video (including playback) it will randomly crash at various points. I can hear the hard drive going crazy sometimes when opening the video. It seems like it struggles to load the overlays and after a while will crash. I haven't investigated that further, but have submitted the error report each time it has happened (clicking the 'send error report' button that comes up with the error message just before Virb Edit crashes).

Thanks for looking into this. Please let me know if I can do anything else to help!!

    Regards,

    Brett,

if this happens again, could you take a screen shot of the error dialog that comes up? I am curious if it's the Garmin error dialog (that'd be good, that means we should have the reports in our system) or if it's a Windows error dialog where it's a bit more tricky for us to get that information.

Thank you so much for your help. We really appreciate it, and it does make a difference in trying to make VIRB Edit a better product.
  • Hi Falagar,

Thanks for your response. Here's the screenshot of the error I get when trying to export the 3 hour video:

It always occurs at 0%. There is no error reported in the Windows Event Viewer.

Here's the screenshot of the error I get during editing (in this case playback of an edited video):

This time it didn't even throw a Virb error to send the error report to Garmin. Usually that's what would have happened (not sure if that behaviour has changed due to the new Virb Edit version). The corresponding error in the Windows Event Viewer is:
Faulting application name: VirbEdit.exe, version: 3.2.0.8, time stamp: 0x55e72b22
Faulting module name: nvd3dum.dll, version: 10.18.13.5582, time stamp: 0x55dc6d9b
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x007454a6
    Faulting process id: 0x16f0
    Faulting application start time: 0x01d0f117c4565c8e
    Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\VIRB Edit\VirbEdit.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nvd3dum.dll
    Report Id: 495c9359-5eac-4cab-a762-82807b73f1e5
    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:

There was also the following .NET runtime error at the same time:
    Application: VirbEdit.exe
    Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: exception code c0000005, exception address 619554A6

Thanks Brett! That will help us at least somewhat.

I believe the information in the event viewer indicates a crash in the Nvidia driver. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad driver, but it's definitely a possibility. Sounds like you already tried updating the drivers?
