Inaccurate Speed Data

Hi,
This is a video I took yesterday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlfZLOPVQCs&feature=youtu.be

As you can see, even at a standstill, my speed is listed as '14 mph'. This is without importing any external gpx or fit file.

Can you tell me how to fix this? Thanks.
  • Hi,

this is not a Virb Edit issue. The Data were recorded by your device. Edit is just displaying them.
When Virb Edit imports Videos from a Virb device, the G-Metrix data will automatically be imported and synchronized with the video.

So what kind of camera are you using? Virb, Elite, X, XE?
GPS is kind of bad, below trees and inside of urban canyons...

(I don´t have hat any issues with deviant speed, as you can see here. Using a XE)
  • A Virb Elite.

I think that the issue *is* the software, because I have an Edge 800 which lives on my handlebars, and almost always has the correct speed (for 'correct', read: the speed I'd expect to be displayed at any particular moment). When I import that FIT file into a clip, replacing the one generated by the camera, it still has my speed as something like 15 mph, or 25 mph or sometimes even 35 - 40mph, even when I'm sitting still at traffic lights.

There's a park near where I live, and on the way home from my daily commute, I'm slowing down at that point, since it's uphill, and I'm pretty beat. My Edge 800 says I come up that hill at around 7 - 8 mph (slowing to 2 - 3 mph when passing a dog walker), yet the Virb Elite says I'm coming up there at 20 mph. And when I import the Edge 800 data into Virb Edit, it says I'm doing 20 mph, too.

Does the speed ever drop to zero?
Have you tried aligning the GPS and video in Virb Edit?
Virb Edit is supposed to align the GPS data with the time stamp on the video, it doesn't always get it right.
I've seen similar effects to yours when I've started the Virb using the slider rather than turning the Virb on and giving it a chance to get a GPS fix before starting recording.

Ah. Now this is interesting. I was actually wondering if deactivating 'auto start' and then using my Edge 800 GPS to switch on the camera, might be a plan.

I shall try this tomorrow. :)

and then using my Edge 800 GPS to switch on the camera,

Best of luck with that, when I've used my 810 as a remote the results have been flakey to say the least, I have a Virb remote to and I can't say that's much better. :( ( I wonder if that's why Evans are selling them off for £17)
