Virb Edit 3.1.0 reboots laptop when opening imported images from Virb Elite

with version 3.1.0 I am still getting problems opening imported images from the Virb Elite, the pictures import apparently ok, they are copied to the configured folder
c:\users\XXX\Piictures\Virb with the prefix I typed
I can open them with preview in file explorer or in some other third party image viewer
The Images appear with a thumbnail on the Media Library, but once I do a right click / View, the computer simply reboots!
I am running Windows 8.1 on a Dell Inspiron 7537 Intel Core i7-4500U 1.80GHz 8Gb RAM, Intel HD Graphics
my driver shows version 10.18.14.4222
which is the last one shown in intel driver update utility
seems newer than the one in dell site:
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/...driverId=WX14C
what can be advised regarding this reboot? should I roll back to the drivers on dell website? look on some log for the origin of the problem?

also when I open virb edit each time I get 2 errors
could not read 35 clips some clips may be missing
could not read 31 clips some clips may be missing
I think this error refers to the previous images I tried to import and then deleted from the media library to add them manually again
how or where can I get information on the clips that are not read, so that I can remove the references to this files and not get the error messages each time I open the program?

    revert back to stable version

why is garmin not allowing the users to revert back to a more stable version ???? its been weeks with no solution to so many issues with this version

why not accept the mistake and while working to fix it let the users revert back to the old version that worked for the most part??

Attached one of the problem photos

I would also like to know if those that are having issues.... do you all have the latest drivers for your video card? I find it strange that an upgrade to Windows 10 fixed this for one user. That tells me that there might be a driver problem. For those that are having issues, would you be willing to share with me what video card you have and what driver?

Microsoft Surface | Windows 8.1 | Intel HD Graphics Family | Driver Date 11/18/2014 | Driver Version 10.18.14.4029

The picture is uploaded from the Videos>VIRB folder on my laptop which should be the same one used in the Virb Edit timeline. It was taken with the Virb while recording video at the same time. The G-Metrix symbol shows as active on the picture inside Virb Edit but I can't check for any data on it inside Virb Edit. The whole system crashes.
  • Greetings all! I am looking into why some of your machines have been rebooting. I find it interesting that Windows 10 makes the problem go away. From other descriptions however, it seems like it is the EXIF data. Is anyone willing to attach a photo here that might be causing your issue? That would help us quite a bit.

    Thanks!

I have tested importing several images coming either from a virb elite or from a mobile phone and every time I try to open the image or if I go straight to create a video and just drag the newly imported image into the video timeline, my computer reboots. I attach one of the latest images I have tried to import at the end of this post, but this seems to happen with any image.

There is also a collateral effect after every reboot, I keep getting growing number of images that could not be read when opening Virb Edit (couple of dialogs at the start), the image I just imported does not show on the media library in Virb Edit, even tough they are in the configured picture folder
Would you please give feedback on how to prevent getting the images cannot be read dialog when opening virb edit, specifically how to clear the library of any references to imported images that gave problems or failed somehow after a program and computer reboot, so at least I can remove this references and avoid importing images in the meantime.
(Edit on this error when opening virb edit : I removed the folders under this path C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit\Database\2\Photos )

I am running Windows 8.1 on a dell inspiron 7537 Intel i7 8Gb RAM 64 bit Intel HD Graphics 1 Gb, driver date is 7/7/2015 driver version 10.18.14.4251

I am still looking into this issue. We believe that it may be Windows 8.1 related. Has anyone seen this in either 10 or 7? Let me know. Thank you!

    Jason
  • might be related with Windows 8.1, I tested an older laptop with Windows 7 64 bit, amd e-350 processor, amd radeon 6310 video, 2.5 Gb ram
might be lower than the minimum requirements.
a test image imports ok, no problem when opening the image or dragging it into the timeline
  • It´s a Dell XPS 12 - Intel i7 - 8Gb RAM - 64bit - Intel HD Graphics 4000 (Driver 10.18.10.3958 - 13.09.2014)
I cannot find the Event Log. But, if you´d like to, I´ll reproduce the reboot and see what I can get.

After upgrading to Win10 the driver was updated to: Version 10.18.10.4252 - 10.07.2015
So it´s probably not directly related to Win10, but to the automatically updated driver.
But I don´t want to reverse the upgrade, try to install that above mentioned driver version on Win 8.1 and try it out...

But after the Windows 10 upgrade you stopped seeing this reboot issue?

Doing it little more reading in this thread it seems as though each of you that has experienced this issue has an Intel family of graphics hardware. Is that correct? Is anyone seeing this issue that does not have Intel hardware for their graphics?

I am just trying to gather all of the facts that I can :)

Thanks guys for all the feedback.

Also has any one else seen edits not being saved? I am unable to reproduce that. We have the intention of committing to disk every change that we make right away. This is for undo among other things.

    Hello FALAGAR,

it´s definitely related to the EXIF Information.
Used (as described above) a Picture from my mobile or downloaded somewhere: No issues.
Using a "raw" imported picture from the Virb XE: Reboot.
Using a resized to FulHD (professional by MS Paint) picture from XE: Reboot (exif still exists)
Using a copied picture from XE (Gimp -> mark & copy all -> new picture [same size] -> paste -> save): Works!!!

You can see, that the image is dropped between the videos, then it takes about a half second (I suggest reading detailed exif information), the pc reboots.
I haven´t tired to take a picture with my mobile and location enabled. I´ll do that later.

The worst thing in my tests has been: Virb Edit doesn´t save my editings :( I created a new video, attach videos, cut them, drop (working) pictures, leave the editing-mode in expectation it will be stored. Opened my editing again to generate the reboot. All my work is gone now
Please also integrate a better auto-save method or a manual way to do that.

    Thank you :)

Is it a specific edit that is missing or was it all of them? Thanks for the clarification.
