Virb Edit 3.1.0 reboots laptop when opening imported images from Virb Elite

with version 3.1.0 I am still getting problems opening imported images from the Virb Elite, the pictures import apparently ok, they are copied to the configured folder
c:\users\XXX\Piictures\Virb with the prefix I typed
I can open them with preview in file explorer or in some other third party image viewer
The Images appear with a thumbnail on the Media Library, but once I do a right click / View, the computer simply reboots!
I am running Windows 8.1 on a Dell Inspiron 7537 Intel Core i7-4500U 1.80GHz 8Gb RAM, Intel HD Graphics
my driver shows version 10.18.14.4222
which is the last one shown in intel driver update utility
seems newer than the one in dell site:
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/...driverId=WX14C
what can be advised regarding this reboot? should I roll back to the drivers on dell website? look on some log for the origin of the problem?

also when I open virb edit each time I get 2 errors
could not read 35 clips some clips may be missing
could not read 31 clips some clips may be missing
I think this error refers to the previous images I tried to import and then deleted from the media library to add them manually again
how or where can I get information on the clips that are not read, so that I can remove the references to this files and not get the error messages each time I open the program?
  • I also can confirm that. After double-clicking an image, the whole PC restarts...

If it causes your entire computer to reboot, it is definitely a driver problem of some kind. We've seen a number of people report this issue. To other people who are seeing this problem, are you also using Intel HD graphics or do you have some other graphics hardware? Companies that produce graphics hardware usually release driver updates pretty frequently in order to address bugs like these, usually every few months. Make sure you have the very latest available drivers. The date on the driver should be from this year. If the problem still occurs then you may need to roll back to an older version until they can fix the problem. If you're feeling really nice, Intel would probably appreciate a bug report.

The clips that cannot be read should have a little exclamation mark icon on top of them.

As far as the crash, that definitely sounds like a driver problem. But we might be able to prevent it if we find out which particular graphics card triggers this.

That would be easiest if we can reproduce this in-house.

Jbadilla, is that a 4k resolution laptop? Or which resolution are you running on that laptop? Does changing the resolution or DPI setting make any difference?

HerrRiebmann, which machine does this happen on for you?

    It´s a Dell XPS 12 - Intel i7 - 8Gb RAM - 64bit - Intel HD Graphics 4000 (Driver 10.18.10.3958 - 13.09.2014)
I cannot find the Event Log. But, if you´d like to, I´ll reproduce the reboot and see what I can get.

    That could be helpful. Thanks!
  • Sorry FALAGAR, there is no EventLog created.
The System reboots immediately. There´s a milisecond until I see the Dell BIOS Boot Logo.
The first Entry says "unsafe reboot" which means it wasn´t shutdown correctly. Thats it.
Under AppData Local & Roaming I cannot see any kind of Log-Files.

My display maximum resolution is 1920 x 1080
the laptop is a dell inspiron 7537 Intel i7 8Gb RAM 64 bit Intel HD Graphics 1 Gb
my driver date is 5/22/2015 driver version 10.18.14.4222

setting the screen resolution down to 1600 x 900 or 1280 x 720 gives the same instant computer reboot when trying to open the imported images on virb edit
I tried also setting the compatibility mode to windows 7, and checking the option to Disable display scaling on high DPI settings, with the same negative result.

Running the Intel Driver Update utility shows no newer driver than the one installed.
  • Hi,

yesterday I created a little video collection from my Virb XE.
I got a funny picture, which I have taken with my phone (HTC One m7 - 2688 x 1520px) and included it in between successfully, by drag&drop.

Then, I wanted to add a picture, taken with the Virb and again the whole PC restarts immediately.
Is it maybe possible, that it´s related to the location-data? Opening and including pictures from different devices is possible, only the Virb material causes reboots.

Hopefully that´s a hint, you can work with!

I am afraid there is no progress on this issue yet, we're still a bit stumped.

We'll keep investigating. If you are also running into this, or have any more information to share, please do.

    Hello FALAGAR,

it´s definitely related to the EXIF Information.
Used (as described above) a Picture from my mobile or downloaded somewhere: No issues.
Using a "raw" imported picture from the Virb XE: Reboot.
Using a resized to FulHD (professional by MS Paint) picture from XE: Reboot (exif still exists)
Using a copied picture from XE (Gimp -> mark & copy all -> new picture [same size] -> paste -> save): Works!!!

You can see, that the image is dropped between the videos, then it takes about a half second (I suggest reading detailed exif information), the pc reboots.
I haven´t tired to take a picture with my mobile and location enabled. I´ll do that later.

The worst thing in my tests has been: Virb Edit doesn´t save my editings :( I created a new video, attach videos, cut them, drop (working) pictures, leave the editing-mode in expectation it will be stored. Opened my editing again to generate the reboot. All my work is gone now
Please also integrate a better auto-save method or a manual way to do that.

    Thank you :)
