Virb elite / Virb edit speed errors

After a half hour mountain bike ride I created a video using Virb edit downloaded from my Virb elite. The heart rate overlay display gives sensible readings but the speed overlay gives silly max readings e.g 145mph.
I used the Garmin fit app on the iPhone at the same time and this gave sensible speed readings (Max 32.1km/h).
Would appreciate any thoughts on this please.

I was previewing a clip I recorded on my motorbike commute a couple of nights ago, about half a mile into the journey I stopped at traffic lights and my speed shot up to 145mph.
I think part of the problem is caused by starting the recording on the slider rather than switching the device on and giving it a chance to get a GPS lock.

    Virb edit

I think Virb edit is the problem. Have just looked at the track files using Garmin Basecamp and the speeds shown there are what I would expect. Therefore Virb edit appears to be misinterpreting the data. Perhaps Garmin would like to look at this please. Before I found out about Basecamp I had already converted the GPX files to text and imported them into Excel with he same results as Basecamp.

I think the issue is in the FIT file. Can you attach the GPX and FIT file for the clip? Right click on clip, Properties, GPS Info, then export both logs.

If there's no FIT file, then just attach the GPX.

    GPX and FIT files

Forum will not permit GPX file upload and FIT file upload is failing even though they are small files!
Is there any other way I can send you the files please?

Virb elite / Virb edit speed errors

    Hi FALAGAR,
Have managed to attach 3 fit files using the basic uploader. Still cannot upload gpx files as these are not permitted by the forum.
Thank you for offering to look at this problem.

Which one is for the clip that shows 145mph?

    High speeds

The high speeds were present on 13 and 14.
Sorry for not responding sooner. We were away in Scandinavia for 10 days.

    Thanks!

I checked out the file from the 13th. It looks like the high speed values are indeed in the FIT file.

They don't show up in BaseCamp because BaseCamp ignores the "speed" data in FIT, and calculates speed from lat/lon changes over time. VIRB Edit assumes that if the FIT file has speed data it's more accurate and prefers it over the calculated speed. That's unfortunately a wrong assumption in your case.

We'll work on the device side to try to fix the erroneous speeds that get written out.

On the VIRB Edit side we are working on a solution that lets the user pick which speed data they want to use: FIT speed, calculated speed, calculated 3D speed, etc.

It looks like the bad data is at the beginning of the file, so you might be able to trim the video so the beginning isn't including and you should get better max values.

I hope this is at least somewhat helpful, our apologies for the trouble.
  • Speed sensor

For the VIRB Elite you can setup the wheel circumference BUT what does it mean since we cannot pair the speed sensor? it's a big requested feature ;)

This has been a problem with the Virb and Virb Elite for a while, if you start the device and can't get a GPS lock straight away the device records a speed of 146MPH on the fit file.

    See this thread https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?178814-Speed-jumps-to-146mph
