Moving videos to different computer

I was on a trip last week and downloaded my VIRB clips to my laptop as my SD card filled. I thought it would be easy to then transfer these to my desktop where using VIRB edit is much easier and faster. Luckily, I did use VIRB edit to make the downloads so I did get the GPS data. Now I find that VIRB edit keeps the fit files in a database and not with the clips.

My question is this. I there an easy way to move things to a different computer. So far all I can find is to export the GPS data, copy these files to the other computer, and then link those files again while making a movie. Is there a more straight forward way to do this? Surely I'm not the only person needing to download clips in the field and then transfer them to a desktop for final editing.

I am afraid we don't have a good solution for this, and I apologize for that. VIRB X/XE will make this easier because it only has FIT files, so it will be a bit simpler.

Does your new computer have the same username as your laptop by chance? Then you could just copy the video files into the same location on your desktop as they were on your laptop, and then copy "C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit" from your laptop to your desktop as well.

If your username isn't the same between laptop and desktop, then it gets a bit more complicated, but I might be able to work some magic.

We need to come up with a way to make this easier, but unfortunately we haven't yet.

The problem with copying the VIRB edit directory from one computer to another is that it requires that the two computers keep exactly the same clips, or you'll blow things up. The point is to be able to offload the SD cards as well as watch some clips to check your setup. I'd like to be able to delete the files from my laptop (actually my Surface Pro) after they are copied.

It sounds like Garmin figured that out with the next generation camera. Unless the Elite could be changed by a firmware update to write fit files, it sounds like I'm stuck with a cludgy solution. Buying a new camera as a fix isn't a user friendly solution.

Hopefully the X/XE cameras will write the fit files to a standard, easily accessible directory.

What I did on my summer trip last year was to completely copy all of the files and directories to a directory on a external HDD (not enough room on my laptop)
Each time when I copied the µSD to HDD it was to a new directory.
In this way you copy both the movies as the GPS-data.

- I can't help with making a virtual SD but it seems it can be done.
- In that case, when you get home you can create a virtual SD and put the data from one of the HDD-directories on this virtual card.
- You can import the data into VIRB Edit like it was from your camera.

- You can also copy all the data from a HDD directory onto a real µSD (I did that).
- Now VIRB Edit will recognise the µSD as a VIRB and import the video's and the data.
