VIRB Edit has stopped working

Hi!

Tried posting into someone else's post who was having a similar issue, but did not receive a response, so starting my own thread - hope someone can help me! As name of thread insinuates, I am getting the (dreaded) error message telling me that VIRB edit has stopped working.

Following advice on this forum, I have uninstalled VIRB Edit software, deleted the entire VIRB Edit folder in C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\, and then reinstalled VIRB Edit software - all to no joy. My PC system is way better than the minimum system requirements, and I too am running Directx 11. My issue only started occurring after I went into the folder that saves all the file clips and deleted all my old ones as had reached 200GB in size, and wanted to free some space from my hard drive.

I've tried running VIRB Edit with Garmin Express open too, and sometimes I get the message that the program has stopped working, and other times, nothing - the splash screen closes and nothing happens. I can of course go directly into the files on the memory card that is in the VIRB, but then it does not overlay the data from my Garmin Edge 810 I have - this is the only reason I chose this Camera as opposed to another make - Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

3.0 is just around the corner, it might make things work better.

I'd also make sure you have the newest driver from your graphics card manufacturer (usually ATI or nVidia).

    Hi Falagar

    Thanks for your reply.

My graphics card is up to date - I run an nVidia GC, and use the nVidia Geoforce Experience panel to ensure all the drivers are up to date.

I have updated to Version 3.0.1 - to no avail - still will not work and get the error message telling me that the program has stopped working

Really frustrating - big supporter with Forerunner watch, Edge 810, Nuvi 800 and Virb - might have to change manufacturers if they cannot release stable programmes for their hardware

    What else can I do??

    Rob,

thanks for trying out 3.0 and I am very sorry that it's still not working.

It sounds like you have done what I would usually recommend (updated drivers, cleared out the database). What computer do you have? Is it a desktop or a laptop?

When do you get that message? Right at start-up or when you try playback or editing?

    Hi Falagar

    Thanks for your assistance.

I have an Intel i5-4690k CPU processor desktop, with 16GB Ram; a GeoForce GTX 750Ti Graphics card; a 128GB SSD for my operating system, and a 1TB hard drive for program files, downloads, etc. This should be more than adequate for what VIRB Edit needs.

Do you think it could be linked to the fact that I deleted all subfolders under C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\ apart from Devices and WebUpdate??

I get the message when I try to open VIRB Edit - either I see the splash screen and then get error message and it shuts down; or nothing happens (ie no splash screen and no error message)

    Rob,

I don't think that should make a difference. Your system should be perfectly fine to run VIRB Edit, I agree.

You're saying VIRB Edit used to run fine, and then stopped working at some point?

One more thing to try: uninstall VIRB Edit once more, delete %appdata%\Garmin\VIRB Edit, and also C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Garmin. And then re-install.

If that doesn't help, I'd like to see if the Windows Event Log will tell anything. After VIRB Edit fails to launch, check the Windows Event Viewer:

ControlPanel->System and Security then select "View event logs" under Administrative Tools
Select the "Windows Logs" folder and then "Application"
The latest entries might be of interest. Send me a PM with what the logs say in the 'General Tab'.

    Hi Falagar

    Thanks for your continued assistance.

Deleting 'C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Garmin.' worked - I had already deleted the other folder in '%appdata%\Garmin\VIRB Edit'.

FYI - VIRB Edit stopped working for me after I had gone through windows explorer, located the folder where the clips are saved (D:\Videos\VIRB for me) and deleted all the clips to free up some space on my hard drive. Not sure if soemwhere in a log file VIRB Edit knows what clips should be in that folder and then crashes when it cannot find them? If this is the case, how should clips be deleted?

    Thanks

    Rob,

I'm glad it's working again! Deleting clips should definitely not make VIRB Edit crash, it should just tell you that it cannot find the clips and offer to browse for them. (And I just checked that this works.)

Unfortunately I really have no idea what could have happened in your case. It sounds like the settings file got corrupted in some way.

If it ever happens again, zip up the C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Garmin folder and send it my way.

Perhaps try deleting clips from within Virb Edit, and check that this doesn't cause the same kind of problem. VE works in 'mysterious ways'......
  • Same problem but no solution found

    Hello ,

I have the same problem and tried everything that has been named in the forum.
    - Upgrade from 2.92
    - Delete and reinstall 3.01
    - Delete the above named directories
    - Install under a different user
    - Run as administrator.
    - etc. etc.

At the first run I can import clips (tried different sizes) , but the next time it always crashes.
Didn't had any problems with 2.92 and the same clips.
But I like to use the option of using photos between the clips so the goal is using 3.01

Does anyone has a solution ?
