GPS Sync - Question

So, I've got a question. I have two basic VIRB's, and a Garmin Edge 510. I've been trying to make some videos and getting extremely frustrated.

My logic says that I should be able to sync the GPS data to the video once, and then as I cut the video up, the GPS data should remain synced and in tact. What actually seems to happen though, is that every time the video is cut/clipped the GPS data after that point gets reset. Is that correct or am I using it wrong?

Editing a two hour race down to a 5 minute video involves lots of "clipping", with some clips being as short as 10 seconds syncing the data with each over and over again is a painstaking process.

I'd love to know if what I'm doing is wrong, or if you are indeed supposed to have to resync constantly. If it's the latter, I think I'll scrap these and go back to my go pro's.

Would it be easier to create the whole video with the data embedded and then edit out the required bits?

That's precisely what I'm trying to do.
  • I think 57DIBBS is suggesting that you export the whole video from VIRB Edit with the gauges showing the correct values and then cut the pieces you don't want out with some other video editor from the exported version.
  • This whole GPS sync thing is a bit of a pain in the bum.
I had two consecutive videos recorded on the Virb Elite, in Virb Edit I added them together as a single movie. The GPS sync for the first part of the resulting movie was surprisingly accurate, but as soon as it transitioned to the second part of the movie, there were a few seconds of "dead" data (all gauges showed zero) and after that the data was a few seconds out on the video. Really frustrating, dont know how to fix that as changing it for the second part wrecks the sync for the first part...

I should add that this is just using the recorded video and recorded GPS info from the Elite only.

I see what you're saying. You're correct. That's probably the way to go. I had not thought of that.
