How to get the laps function working?

According to this thread, it's possible to add lap data:

https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?136698-VIRB-Edit-2-7-0-released

It's not entirely clearcut on how it works though, it implies it calculates the laps itself (like Dashware does) but when I try it I'm getting no data out of it - it shows all laps as lap 1 and no best times. I recorded a race of around 15 laps using a Virb Elite and then replacing the GPS tracks with those from a Garmin Edge 800 since it's more accurate, I've clicked the set activity start time but I'm not getting any lap data. As I never remember to press the lap button on the Edge it didn't record any lap data itself.

I'd love to get this working as it's one of the only features I miss from Dashware.

Thanks,
John

Do you have the track as gpx or fit file?

The track is a fit file, I chose it within the Edit software straight from the Edge 800. I need to do more testing but I think the problem is caused by using the Edge 800 track which doesn't have any laps on it which I'm assuming is overriding Edit's calculations? I tried a fresh video last night and didn't to the GPS file replacement and the lap system was working, I didn't want to muck about with it until I got an export so I've done that and will have another look - it was only a single clip so I'm curious to see if it still works with the full video (two and a half clips)

The idea is that VIRB Edit will use any lap data that we get from FIT (like from an Edge) and try to do our own lap calculation if there is no lap data.
