Can you make a video over 4GB?

I keep getting a pop up in Virb Edit stating that it would be best to keep the video in the 4GB area.
The video I have is like 11GB to make.

Is it better to have it 4GB or what?

Cannot some compression be built into the software on export to reduce the file size, example HANDBRAKE
