VIRB with Turbo

I'm wanting to use my VIRB with my turbo trainer. When using my turbo I turn the GPS off and record the stats using the speed and cadenece sensors and my Edge 1000.

When I turn the GPS off I don't get the speed / cadence data which I'd like to overlay on my videos. Is there a way I can do this?

Cheers

It sounds like you speed and cadence sensors aren't paired, try re-pairing them.
  • I don't think that's it. I had the same trouble last winter when I tried using my VIRB Elite once while I was riding rollers. (I was having sensor dropout problems with my Edge 800, so that day I ran my 800, my Fenix, my old 705 and my VIRB Elite to make sure it wasn't a problem with the 800.) The VIRB Elite isn't designed to be a head unit, so it doesn't have an indoor mode. So when you turn the GPS off, you don't get data recorded. I remember seeing my speed on the Dashboard, so it was picking up and displaying my GSC-10, but afterwards, no data in the FIT or GPX (I was recording video just in case that was necessary).

The solution is to simply use the track from the 1000 in VIRB Edit.
  • I thought (for the Virb Elite at least) that it could only be paired to a Cadence sensor and it got speed from the inbuilt GPS receiver, NOT from the GSC-10?

It will display speed from a GSC10
  • It will display speed from a GSC10

How do I pair my Virb Elite with the speed from my GSC-10?
The only 4 options in the Virb menu is HR, Cadence, Temp, and Power.

Fwiw, I use a Stages Power meter to get my Cadence. The Virb manual also suggests that a GPS signal is required for Location, Speed, Distance and Altitude.

EDIT, i stand corrected, the Virb does pock up the speed from the sensor, i tried it in the garage and it didnt work, but then found some other threads on the forum about it and tried it outside and yes, the Virb shows the speed. One thing I'm not sure of though, is once moving, which takes precedent, the GPS derived speed or that of the GSC-10?
  • Good question, but it's easy enough to find out by a test. Go into the Power section and set the wheel circumference to something outlandish. Verify that it gives weird results by hand spinning the wheel, and then go out for a short test video. See what the VIRB records.

My guess, just based on the fact that I have speed sensors on all three of my bikes and they all have different wheel circumferences is that it uses GPS to derive speed and distance, or at least to auto calibrate the wheel size. The option says "Cadence" (early on it used to say something like "Spd/Cad"). There's no way in that section to set the wheel circumference where on every other Garmin device I have there's a way to manually set the wheel size right there in the "speed/cadence" selection. They may have actually thought about the multi-bike situation. When I've looked at my videos taken on my various bikes, the speed has not seemed off (but the altitude usually does, so I almost always replace the track with the track from my Edge 800, which does know the correct sizes). But the test will tell you if you want to find out for sure.
