Speed jumps to 146mph

I've noticed on a few of my recordings that the speed jumps from 0 to 146mph for no reason a few times.

Normally when I'm stationary & at the first few minutes of a ride.

I use a 3rd party speed/cadence sensor and have checked that I'm not just rolling the magnet quickly past the sensor if I'm stopped.

My Garmin Edge 800 is also synced with my sensor and this speed jump has never appeared on it.

Anyone shed some light on this

Cheers

The Virb should take it's speed from the GPS, it should only display the speed from the sensor in the absence of a GPS signal.

Actually I think its the other way round from what I can see once the sensor has been paired up to the virb. I always want my speed from my sensor as it more accurate than GPS. Is why I have the speed/Cadence sensor in the first place to get more accurate speed data so when I've stopped on the video the speed actually reads 0mph
  • Hi,

How have you got on with this issue?

I have had exactly the same problem. While i am moving the Virb logs speed fine but when i stop it logs 146mph until i start moving again. So frustrating because at the end of a ride it says my top speed was 146!! i have sent 2 Virbs back to Garmin and they are testing my second one to see why.

Please reply if you have found out what causes this or if it is an inherent fault with the Virb Elite

I've just been looking at the .fit file from today's ride on one of my Virb's, it appears I was doing 146 mph around my kitchen for nearly 9 minutes before I left the house and got on the bike.
It seems that either once a good GPS lock was received or the cadence sensor detected the MPH sorted itself out.

Edit: Just checked my second Virb and that also recorded a speed of 146.03 MPH, 18 seconds after it was turned on, but just for one second, followed by 97.92 MPH and 48.96 MPH, also in my kitchen.
I suppose it could cause a problem with the Maximum scale of any Speedometer gauges, once I'd deleted all the high readings the max speed for the rest of the ride for both Virb's was 41 MPH (you don't really need a speedo that goes up to 150 MPH if your max is only going to be 41 MPH).

how did you delete the high readings

I use fit file repair tool, I've got the paid version but I think the free version would do what you want.
It shouldn't be a problem in Virb Edit anyway, because the high speed reading should be before or at the start of any video and could be trimmed out.
  • I have found that with my virbs they could log a speeed of 146 at any pause in a ride until it eventually sorts itself out. For example I had one ride where I stopped 3 times. It logges 146 mph at the start and during the first two stops. at the third stop it logged 146 to start with then dropped to 0 mph during that stop. On other rides once it has realised what 0 mph is then it is fine after that. I am wondering if it needed a longer period to calibrate 0 mph before setting off.

The interesting bit is that it didnt show speeds of 146mph either on the video (with the speed overlay it just displayed 0 mph) or on Strava (although Strava omitted stationary periods). It only shows 146 mph on Garmin connect. I hope there is a fix because the last thing i want to do is manually edit my rides before uploading them.

Does anyone else use Strava or similar and finds that it does or doesn't show 146 mph??

    Cheers

By "stopped" do you mean turned off the Virb?
In my case it appears that the 146 MPH is recorded while the Virb is searching for a GPS signal after switch on.

BTW this thread would probably be better located in the Virb section of the forum.
Also is there a way of communicating this bug to the Virb firmware team.

    Also seen this

I've also seen this behavior both at the beginning of a video and during when I am stationary. In one instance whilst stationary my speed switches between 0 and 146mph 3 times over the course of a minute or so.

Virb Edit must be calculating the speed from the change in position as the GPX file does not log speed, only the GPS co-ordinates every 1 second. If the firmware was reporting movement of 146mph in the GPX file I'd expect my position on the map to be moving very quickly, but I correctly appear stationary on this. If the map isn't showing movement this would indicate to me that the GPX file is correct. That leads me to believe this is more likely a Virb Edit issue than a firmware issue.

The 146 MPH speed is recorded in the .FIT file on the Virb long before it gets anywhere near Virb Edit, how can it be a Virb Edit issue?
