Is this for real?

Hello guys,

I'm hoping that you can help me here, I have had my VIRB Elite for less than a week and I'm already considering returning it to Amazon.

Nothing works.

The camera freezes, it shows a speed reading when it is still and as I wanted to use it with the Auto Start function this means that as long as the camera is switched on it will try to start recording.

The connection between my phone and the camera fails constantly then without any changes being made re-connects after telling me that the WiFi network is incompatible.

The VIRB Edit software is of no use at all, the clips imported to it from the camera show up with the famous black screen (which no-one seems to have an answer for) and once the software has finished failing to show the requested clip it crashes anyway.

For a camera of this price the list of fails here is unbelievable, why are there so many software issues on a product released for sale?

Geforce 6150se Nforce 430
AMD AthlonII X4 605E 2.3ghz
64bit Windows 7 Home Premium

Firmware on camera and all drivers are up to date.

I'd love to keep this camera, the functions are amazing but if none of them can be made to work it's going back.

I really would love to hear that these issues can be fixed.

    hi Steven,

After you updated the firmware, did you perform a Master Reset? The reason that I suggest this is my Virb Elite started doing some very strange things after one such firmware upgrade - doing a Master Reset pretty much resolved all the issues I was having with it.

    cheers

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply, I did perform the master reset, no difference though.
57DIBBS, not really seeing the point of your input.

not really seeing the point of your input.

    Really?
    You claim
    Nothing works.
, I have a Virb and a Virb Elite and while they and the Virb Edit software are not perfect, they work pretty well.
As far as I can see you have two options, persevere with your Virb and get to the bottom of the problems or return it for a refund.
  • If the firmware is up to date you can do the following.
Insert the SD card in you computer , using a card reader, and format the SD card.

Insert the MicroSD card in the Virb again.
this helps me when my virb's are getting instable.

With Virb edit it helps sometimes to close the program before exporting.

    Hi again 57DIBBS,

It is not up to the consumer to be ironing out software bugs in a device released for sale, this should have been done by Garmin.
If your only purpose on this forum is to score points against other users you might want to look at your motivations for posting, nothing you have said so far has been constructive at all.
If you don't have any constructive comment to make then maybe you shouldn't at all.

    Have a great day,

    I'm out.

    Thanks Guido,

It is a real shame that what could be an amazing product is ruined by awful software, ultimately I think that it will be going back.
I was really hoping to find an alternative to a GoPro but they seem to be mostly trouble free with none of the problems that make this unit unusable.
I'll be returning the camera and buying a GoPro to replace it.
Really disappointed with this outcome but thanks for your help anyway.

    Cheers,

I got my Virb Elite with FW2.70 inside. It was buggy as hell - I couldn't tell if it was recording or it had frozen . The camera may be blinking red but not recording. Many times I had to pull the battery out to turn off the unit (unresponsive). Needless to say I missed many footage which I thought the camera was recording. And when I ran it through WebUpdater (back then), it could not detect FW 2.80 was available. I forced manual update using the gupdate.gcd method and voila, all those bugs were gone. I took it to Japan for a week and it performed flawlessly with no crashes or hung unit. In my case, the hardware was the same, only the firmware was updated : the culprit was likely the FW. I did not return the unit.
